For the “Rothaus im Gerber” restaurant, Blocher Partners have reinterpreted well-known Black Forest motifs and the coziness of rustic inns in a new way. Among other things, the specially developed “Honett” chair series combines tradition and modernity: a beautifully designed pub chair made of solid wood that is comfortable, robust and elegant at the same time.
Black Forest atmosphere in the center of Stuttgart: For the “Rothaus im Gerber” restaurant, Blocher Partners have reinterpreted well-known Black Forest motifs and the cosiness of rustic inns in a new way, far removed from any retro folklore. Light-colored wood in the dining room and a tiled stove in the lounge area convey a sense of coziness, while the shingle pattern on the wall and the lighting concept set a contemporary and fresh tone. The specially developed “Honett” chair series also combines tradition and modernity: an elegant pub chair made of solid wood that is comfortable, robust and elegant at the same time.
Bringing the Black Forest to Stuttgart – that is what the traditional state brewery Rothaus wanted to do with its first restaurant outside its headquarters in the Upper Black Forest. For the new restaurant in the mall in the Gerberviertel district, Stuttgart architects Blocher Partners have reinterpreted the familiar. A sense of home is combined with international flair. The design also plays with associations of the rugged and austere Black Forest, with authenticity and down-to-earthness.
The restaurant
Inspired by the contrast of dark coniferous forest and bright clearings, the 760 square meter interior is divided into different zones. The bar and lounge area are bathed in darker tones. They are spanned by a ceiling of black smoked wooden shingles. Between the tiled stove and cuckoo clock, the lounge with its comfortable armchairs beckons. The dining room with long wooden tables, on the other hand, is characterized by light-colored softwood. It thus skillfully combines rusticity and lightness. The floors are made of whitewashed and oiled fir wood. The shingles of the wall cladding in turn form a pattern of abstract fir cones. These also adorn the label of the well-known beer of the same name.
The new pub chair: elegant and authentic
The chairs were designed by the architects themselves as a key element in the overall concept. For Jürgen Gaiser, interior designer and partner at Blocher Partners, it was important to develop a solid, comfortable and honest pub chair. This should combine proven construction methods with timeless lines and focus on craftsmanship, durability and sustainability.
After an initial design, the architects then contacted the Swiss chair manufacturer Horgenglarus. In close collaboration with the company – which has extensive expertise in bentwood furniture in particular and produces a purist design classic with cult status in the form of the “Moser chair” – the solid wood chair was meticulously detailed and precisely crafted. As with the classic table chair, the turned front legs are inserted into the seat plate. However, the curved back legs and back struts are manufactured as a single element and guided through the seat. This required an ingenious plug-in system, as did the milled and curved solid wood backrest.
The product range for the chair
The chair recently went into series production under the name “Honett”. The product range includes a bar stool that is as slim as it is sturdy and a bench with a light appearance. The architects also designed these for the restaurant. A special feature of the bar stool is that the foot ring, which provides stability, is made of cast iron rather than chrome profiles. This makes the stool more robust. However, the seating furniture is not only visually appealing, but also impresses with its quality craftsmanship. The special features also include velvety-soft polished surfaces as well as comfort, which has been optimized down to the millimetre-precise seat recess.
