Doors with aluminum frames form a special connection: not only between rooms, but also between different materials and materials. With its special properties, aluminum provides both a visual boundary and a harmonious combination between wall and door leaf. Frames made of aluminum can be ideally integrated into the respective environment and can be combined with door leaves made of wood, glass or aluminum. They frame and protect passageways, connecting paths and openings in the building in a special way.

Küffner aluminum frames are used in office and administration buildings, as well as in schools, kindergartens and hospitals. Their anodized surfaces are very hard-wearing and even harder than stainless steel. They are also corrosion-resistant. Küffner frames are therefore particularly suitable for use in swimming pools and wellness facilities.

The anodized surfaces never appear cold or lifeless, as they reflect the light and colors of the surroundings with their deep shine. Colored surfaces are powder-coated and are of higher quality, more durable and longer-lasting than painted wood or steel.

The profiles in the “Hardline” or “Slimline” series have a linear, sleek and slimline appearance, making them important design elements in architecture.

IBA’27: Competition “Postareal Böblingen”

Building design

The winning design for the competition for the IBA’27 project “Postareal Böblingen” was created by Gutiérrez from Madrid in collaboration with UTA Architekten und Stadtplaner from Stuttgart.

45 offices from Germany, Austria, Poland, Vietnam, the USA and the Netherlands submitted their designs to the competition for the IBA’27 project “Postareal Böblingen”. The winning design was submitted by Gutiérrez from Madrid in collaboration with UTA Architekten und Stadtplaner from Stuttgart. Find out more about the pioneering new urban building block here.

The Postareal Böblingen is currently one of 14 official projects taking place as part of IBA’27, which is being organized in the Stuttgart city region in 2027. In an open and international competition, the Böblingen building society was looking for ideas to upgrade the town center.

The winning design from Madrid and Stuttgart envisages three differently sized buildings in the post office area next to the Böblingen railroad station. All buildings are to be equipped with a communal roof garden. Towards the station, a 20-storey high point is also intended to set a significant accent in the area. The buildings are to be constructed largely in timber with concrete access cores. The planners plan to recycle the building material from the existing post office building and reuse certain components. New pathways flanked by trees and other greenery are intended to loosen up the area and make it more permeable. A spacious square with a grove and water features is also to be created towards the station.

The lower floors of the three new buildings will provide space for restaurants, retail, small production companies, co-working and possibly also a generation and education center. On the upper floors, apartments are to be created for people with a wide range of needs and living situations. Traditional multi-room apartments, cluster apartments, micro-apartments for temporary living and apartments for creative people where they can combine living and working are all possible options. Small-scale communal spaces such as work areas or libraries, supplemented by public uses, are to be distributed across all three new buildings.

The chairman of the jury and president of the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects, Markus Müller, is very pleased with the winning submission: “The result presents a solution for the new post office site that demonstrates a high-quality density on the one hand and a good further development of the urban living space on the other. The design offers many flexible possibilities that can be built upon very well.”

Rainer Ganske, Managing Director of Böblinger Baugesellschaft, also expressed his satisfaction with the results of the competition. As desired, the winning design responds to the needs of the citizens in many places and shows numerous ideas for greening. A visually attractive high point completes the flexible usage concept.

Over the next few months, those responsible will develop the winning design for the Böblingen post office site into a development proposal. More than just one office is to be commissioned for the building planning. The clients want to achieve the most diverse architecture possible in the area. To this end, a dialog phase between the commissioned offices, Böblinger Baugesellschaft, an advisory committee and the public is planned. The concept should be completed in fall 2021 and construction of the district should start in 2023. It should then be completed by the end of 2026, just in time for the public presentation in the run-up to IBA’27.

In addition to the winning design from Madrid and Stuttgart, the jury also awarded prizes to other submissions. Second place went to hdg Architekten from Bad Kreuznach with Architekturbüro Podehl from Boppard and bauchplan Landschaftsarchitekten und Stadtplaner from Munich. Third prize went to the design by superwien architecture urbanism from Vienna. In addition to representatives of Böblinger Baugesellschaft, the city of Böblingen, the local council and IBA’27, the jury also included three citizen representatives.

The citizens can look forward to a forward-looking new urban building block with a striking high point that will represent a strong overall enhancement at this location, said Böblingen’s Lord Mayor Dr. Stefan Belz. I am delighted and would like to express my sincere thanks to the citizens’ representatives for their participation and for the valuable contributions they have made to the jury. This means that a project is also being created from the community.”

The International Building Exhibition 2027 in the Stuttgart city region aims to find answers to the question of how citizens want to live and work in the future. Ideas are to be found in dialog with residents in order to successfully master social, technological and ecological change. The exhibition aims to make the departure into the future visible and tangible through innovative construction projects in the region.

Are you also familiar with the competition to redesign a former industrial site in Backnang-West? The project is also part of IBA’27. The competition was won by Teleinternetcafe Architektur und Urbanismus from Berlin and Treibhaus Landschaftsarchitektur from Hamburg. Read more about the Backnang-West competition here.

The mosaic cross by Claus Kilian (*1928) is attached to the exterior façade of the rectory of St. Martin’s Church in Hildesheim-Himmelsthür. The high-quality mosaic was made from smalt, gold, limestone and marble tessarae and depicts a typical scene from the life of St. Martin.

The mosaic, which was only created in 1995, was in a very desolate condition. The mosaic, which was glued to a plastic mesh, was peeling off in numerous places. It had already been glued again in various places. The adhesive used is probably not suitable for outdoor use. As the structure of the substrate and the adhesive used were the cause of the damage, the mosaic had to be removed from the wall, applied to a new substrate and reattached in its original position.

You can find out more about the removal, the new backing material and the fixing agent in RESTAURO 03.2014.
