Art in public space

The guide “Dealing with art in public spaces”, edited by Kristina Herbst and Andreas Buder, is the result of the research project “Materiality in art and culture” at the Bern University of the Arts HKB. It is aimed at the broad group of people affected by the preservation of art in outdoor spaces.

The richly illustrated booklet is divided into three parts. Firstly, the basic terms, responsibilities and procedures are explained. This is followed by a “guide” that serves as a methodical approach to the preservation of art in public spaces. Finally, case studies from Switzerland are presented that had to be maintained, serviced or even relocated. Although the specific measures carried out are not described in detail, the illustrations of the contemporary artworks indicate the variety of materials and thus the wide range of problems.
