The team of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, the Museumsbund Österreich and ICOM Austria invite you to the 32nd Austrian Museum Day in Graz from October 6 to 8, 2021 on the occasion of the “Steiermark Schau“. The motto is “Museum: Sustainable!”. The program will take place both on site and digitally. Registration for the Austrian Museum Day 2021 will be possible from July.
The ICOM-CECA Conference will kick off the program on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 and, after a year of massive restrictions on working with the public, will ask how cultural mediators want to deal with proximity and distance in museums in the future. After a city walk with the Art in Public Space team or a visit to the Graz Museum and new, different insights into the city of Graz, the award ceremony for the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality will take place in the evening.
On Thursday, October 7, 2021, everything will revolve around the topic of sustainability in the sense of #museumsforfuture: museums can assume joint responsibility in the climate crisis, become role models and take on socially relevant topic leadership. Sustainability within the museum organization and sustainability in communication! There will be expert presentations by Karl W. Steininger (Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change, Graz), ICOM keynote Caitlin Southwick (Ki Culture, Amsterdam) as well as Breath Earth Collective, Graz (requested) and Sigrid Bürstmayr (FH Joanneum, Graz). There will also be news about the Austrian Ecolabel for museums and the pilot project “17 MUSEUMS x 17 SDGs – Sustainable Development Goals“. The Austrian Museum Award will be presented in the evening.
Friday, October 8, 2021, will be directed by museologist Gottfried Fliedl, who – inspired by Krzysztof Pomian’s text “The Museum at the End of Time?” – invited numerous panel guests, including Stella Rollig (General Director, Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna), Matthias Beitl (Director, Volkskundemuseum Wien), Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek (Curator, Vienna) and Hanno Loewy (Director, Jewish Museum Hohenems), to talk with him and Nina Schedlmayer (cultural journalist, cultural critic, editor-in-chief morgen, Vienna) about the sustainable future of museums for our society. A long lunch break invites you to an open-ended discussion in small groups before the team of the Universalmuseum Joanneum invites you to a barbecue party.
“Styria Show”
The excursion on Saturday, October 9, 2021, leads to the exhibition venues of the “Steiermark Schau” – Kunsthaus Graz, Museum of History, Folklore Museum and finally to the Mobile Pavilion in Bad Radkersburg. If you are not so keen on traveling, you can explore both locations together with the Graz Museum team.
