So what can exhibitors and visitors expect now?
BAU, the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, materials, and systems, will not take place as a traditional in-person event next year. Despite a sophisticated hygiene plan, Messe München, together with BAU’s advisory board and board of trustees, decided on a hybrid format from January 13 to 15, 2021. This will give exhibitors the opportunity to present their innovations digitally as well. The digital component of this year’s event is also set to be an important part of the traditional in-person BAU 2023 trade show.
As recently as June, Messe München, together with both committees, had announced that the event would go ahead as planned in January 2021—though with the proviso of monitoring developments and reassessing the situation at the end of September, before exhibitors had made the bulk of their trade show investments. Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of Messe München, commented: “Falling infection rates and the reopening of borders in June gave us justified hope for a significant improvement in the situation. Unfortunately, the outlook has changed significantly over the course of September. Even though an in-person trade show would be possible with our safety and hygiene measures in place, the designation of an increasing number of high-risk areas across Europe—and the associated travel restrictions—has now made this decision necessary. According to our exhibitor survey, which we conducted in recent days—particularly in light of the worsening COVID-19 situation—the vast majority of our exhibitors now consider participation in an in-person trade show to be unrealistic, since, given the current situation, it is to be expected that only a few of the originally anticipated visitors will be on site.” Dieter Schäfer, long-time chairman of the BAU Advisory Board and Board of Trustees, agrees with Reinhard Pfeiffer: “The decision made in June was the right one. At that time, it would have been far too early to call BAU into question. It was clear to all of us that clarity had to be established by the end of September. That is why it made sense to conduct a survey last week. The Advisory Board and Board of Trustees stand behind the decision to replace BAU 2021 with a hybrid format.”
Postponing BAU was discussed with the Advisory Board and the Board of Trustees. However, postponing the trade show was never a serious option because it would have disrupted the two-year innovation cycle that BAU has always followed, according to Martin Hörmann, vice chair of both committees. Hörmann continued: “International exhibitors and visitors are a core element of the traditional BAU. Under the current COVID-19 conditions, we would not have been able to meet this expectation.”
In addition to a compact exhibition area, the hybrid format includes supplementary digital offerings. Exhibitors will be able to showcase their products at the ICM International Congress Center Munich as well as in up to two additional exhibition halls. Forums and special exhibitions can also be held there. Companies wishing to exhibit on-site can choose between system booths and custom booth designs. The digital component focuses on presentations and discussions from the forums, as well as pre-recorded videos. These will be available as live streams to the international audience. Furthermore, companies can present their products virtually in their own online sessions. The hybrid format offers virtual networking modules for interaction with other participants. There are also plans to integrate the traditional BAU Info Talks.
Registration Opens Online in Mid-October
Details on the new format, as well as information on participation options for exhibitors and visitors, are expected to be available online starting in mid-October at www.bau-muenchen.com. Exhibitors who had already booked a booth for the traditional in-person trade show can still present their products on-site. In 2023, BAU will then take place as usual, including the additional digital offerings that will be available for the first time in a hybrid format this coming January.
