All over the world, major cities are looking for sustainable solutions to reduce the rising heat islands. With moderate success. And this despite the fact that there are already numerous very good ideas, innovations and strategies. In collaboration with experts from around the world and an exclusive selection of companies from the green infrastructure sector, the Beat the Heat Initiative bundles the crucial expert knowledge on sustainable cooling of our cities on an online platform, presents the latest projects and innovations and summarizes what urban decision-makers need to know today to ensure a liveable metropolis of tomorrow. Together, we can take action to cool our cities and create a more liveable, sustainable urban environment for all.
The UHIE - anything but unstoppable
The urban heat island effect refers to the phenomenon whereby urban areas experience higher temperatures than the surrounding rural areas due to human activities such as buildings, roads and transportation that absorb and trap heat. 60,000 – according to the WHO, this is the number of heat-related deaths in Europe in 2022 alone. The urban heat island effect causes temperatures in urban areas to rise to extreme levels. This heat not only has a negative impact on the well-being and health of city dwellers, but also affects energy consumption and air and water quality. This is one of the biggest challenges facing cities around the world today. If not the biggest. But the urban heat island effect is by no means unstoppable. For this reason, the two urban planning magazines G+L and toposmagazine have joined forces to form the Beat the Heat Initiative.
Mission: Improving the quality of urban life
Working with international experts from the private sector, academia and city governments, the Beat the Heat Initiative’s mission is to raise awareness of the urban heat island effect and empower individuals, businesses and communities to take effective action to mitigate its impact. By implementing simple but effective strategies, we can reduce heat build-up, save energy, improve air quality and enhance the overall quality of life in our cities.
