Studio grüngrau and O&O Baukunst win the “Südlich des Botanikums” competition in Munich.
Studio grüngrau and O&O Baukunst win the competition “Südlich des Botanikums” in Munich.
The first three places in the competition
On April 29, 2022, a jury decided on the invitational competition for the “Südlich des Botanikums” site in Munich. The urban development and landscape planning competition called on the eight participating offices to propose a structural development for the current agricultural land. An attractive urban quarter is to be created on the 2.6-hectare site.
The competition was won by O&O Baukunst GmbH from Cologne and studio grüngrau Landschaftsarchitektur from Cologne. The joint entry impressed the jury with its good open space networking and “clear but varied urban design”. It unanimously named the winner, as well as second and third place. su und z Architekten BDA from Munich took second place together with studio B landschaftsarchitektur. ENEF Architekten and Stephan Huber Landschaftsarchitektur, both from Munich, won third place in the competition for the area near the Botanikum.
The results of the competition can be viewed in an exhibition from June 21 to July 1, 2022 at the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations at Blumenstraße 28b in room 017 in Munich. On June 20, Sabine Steger, Senior Building Director of the West District, opened the exhibition on the Munich Botanikum.
The area south of the Munich Botanikum
The planning area south of the Munich Botanikum is located on the northern edge of the Moosach district. Of the 7.4 hectares of land, part is expected to be used for the development of around 550 apartments and as a primary school site. In addition, the city stipulates that the adjoining residential area to the south should be connected by new infrastructure and green spaces. It is particularly important to safeguard the ecologically significant green connections south of the marshalling yard and north of the former railway line.
City planning councillor Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Merk proposed changing the land use plan for the area to the south of the Munich Botanikum. The development plan was developed as part of the urban and landscape planning competition. The results of the competition form the basis for the subsequent development plan procedure. According to the City of Munich, extensive public participation is also planned at an early stage.
The Munich Botanikum on the site of a former nursery consists of both artists’ studios and event spaces for rent. Public areas and nature conservation compensation areas, areas for species protection measures and a supra-regional youth cultural center are to be created here. The site belongs to the competition organizers, MünchenBau Holding GmbH and Terrafinanz Projekt 2 GmbH.
The winning design by O&O Baukunst and studio grüngrau
The entry by O&O Baukunst and studio grüngrau is characterized by a high degree of flexibility in the use of the buildings, a large connected inner courtyard and a closed perimeter development. This is intended to provide good shielding against noise emissions to the south of the Munich Botanic Center. Two high points on Feldmochinger Strasse create an entrance to the city for the future residents of the site.
The jury was impressed by the high residential quality of the design. The jury was particularly impressed by the large inner courtyard with its great potential for the residential environment, as it can offer a high quality of stay as well as climate adaptation, fire protection, kindergarten areas and intensive greening.
The jury pointed out that the two high points appear somewhat over-instrumented and should be more differentiated and controlled in the further development. The high flexibility of use of the buildings will be planned more precisely in the next steps. This also includes a reassessment of the building density, including a possible reduction in the floor area. Overall, the jury described the winning design as a “very convincing entry” and unanimously recommended that studio grüngrau and O&O Baukunst be commissioned with further planning for the area south of the Botanikum Munich in accordance with the competition brief.
Further innovative ideas will soon be presented and discussed during the Stadmacher*innen conference in Munich – find out more about the conference here: Munich Future
