A Park Inspired by Observation and Everyday Life
Chakrajeevan Udyan in Ahmedabad, India, is a contemporary example of forward-thinking garden and landscape design in an urban setting. This sustainable city park was not designed in the abstract, but rather developed through intensive observation of its daily use.
A key problem became apparent early on: Many user groups—especially women, children, and older adults—felt unsafe in the park’s existing state and avoided it. The new concept addresses this issue directly and deliberately reverses this reality.
Safety and Orientation as the Foundation of the Design
The design of the sustainable city park is based on three clear principles: safety, legibility, and accessibility.
A continuous, gently curving main path forms the backbone of the park. This “spine” connects all areas and leads to clearly defined gathering zones.
Children’s areas and zones for seniors are deliberately arranged within sight of one another. In between are regularly spaced seating areas for accompanying adults and visitors of all ages. This creates an open, easily navigable spatial structure that fosters safety through visibility.
Confusing corners or hidden areas have been consistently avoided. As a result, the park remains intuitively understandable and socially manageable.
A Sustainable City Park Through Circular Thinking
A central element is the consistent use of reused materials. Over 30,000 square feet of building materials—including concrete, steel, wood, brick, tile, and tires—were recycled and reinterpreted.
These materials form the basis of all park elements:
- Concrete pipes as play and climbing structures
- Steel rods as lightweight pergolas
- Tiles as durable walkway surfaces
- Wood and tires as seating and play elements
In this way, the sustainable city park itself becomes a visible cycle of materials, use, and renewal.










Measurable environmental impact
Reuse significantly reduces the ecological footprint. In total, approximately 36 metric tons of CO₂ were saved.
To put this in perspective, that is roughly equivalent to:
- 1,700 trees over ten years
- 150,000 km of car travel
- Electricity for 25 households per year
- 81 flights avoided
This approach doesn’t just plan for sustainability—it makes it tangibly understandable.
Social Design Instead of Mere Design
The sustainable city park is not just a space, but also a social system. The design consciously takes human behavior into account and promotes respectful use.
Open sightlines, clear pathways, and a lack of hiding spots ensure safety. At the same time, the park remains lively, playful, and inviting.
Ergonomic details such as seat heights, shaded areas, accessible paths, and non-slip surfaces also help ensure that people of all ages feel equally comfortable.
Local Identity as a Design Force
The choice of materials is deliberately local and authentic. Concrete, steel, and wood are left unclad, retaining their natural appearance. This creates an authentic aesthetic that reflects the place.
The park thus tells not only an ecological story but also a cultural one.
Chakrajeevan Udyan demonstrates how a modern, sustainable urban park can function: safely, inclusively, and in a resource-efficient manner.
