With the 77 m high residential tower “900 Mahler” in Gustav Mahlerlaan, the architectural firm Inbo Amsterdam has created an impressive building that fits perfectly into the skyline of Amsterdam’s financial district. The architecture of the 22-storey building pays homage to the impressive New York skyscrapers of the 1920s and 1930s. Based on a sturdy multi-storey base, the clinker-brick tower rises high and features a classic crown that tapers upwards. For the detailed clinker brick façade of “900 Mahler”, Klinkerwerk Hagemeister produced the “Ruhrerde” sorting. The dark coal-fired clinker brick shows numerous nuances, from various shades of brown to almost anthracite; the color and surface structure have a dynamic and tactile effect. “The clinker brick is decisive for the appearance, radiance and atmosphere of the building,” says Inbo project architect Rik Bakker. “We wanted to achieve a particularly solid and at the same time lively effect.”

The masonry of the residential tower consists almost entirely of prefabricated façade elements. “Prefabricated elements are a good alternative to traditional brickwork here because of the height and the inner-city construction site,” explains Bakker. Elaborate, repetitive details of the façade could each be realized from an identical form. Designed as sandwich elements, the prefabricated elements consist of a concrete slab, an insulating layer and the outer clinker brick layer. The bricks are processed in different lengths, thicknesses and shapes. For each floor, 27 prefabricated elements with a height of around 3.30 m and widths of between 3 m and 5.70 m were used.

With the “900 Mahler” residential tower, the architectural firm Inbo has translated the characteristic elements of traditional New York skyscrapers into a contemporary design for high-quality living.
