We inform you about the competition results in May: two future gardens of the IGA 2027 and the redesign of the city center in Schleswig.

The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region wants to present four future gardens at the International Garden Exhibition 2027. We have already reported on the winning designs for “Emscher nordwärts” in Dortmund (bbz landschaftsarchitekten) and “Landschaft in Bewegung” in Bergkamen/Lünen (GREENBOX). The third future garden in Gelsenkirchen will become an island of the future. In addition to preserving the post-industrial character, water and the island location characterize the design. The connecting element for the island of the future is a successively emerging forest fringe. A green-blue band runs through the island as a large structure. The ribbon of plants with a water purification function integrates the former coal bunker, which is being transformed into the Green Tower complete with media façade. To the north of the green-blue ribbon are the mobility axis and the so-called Digital Path. The latter deals with the history of the Future Island and presents digital information using augmented reality. Fragile path axes at right angles to the main linear direction enable a network-like development and create references to the shore and across the water.

The fourth Future Garden of the IGA 2027 is dedicated to the RheinPark in Duisburg, including its connection. According to the jury, the winning design is climate-friendly and diverse without denying the past. The new park enters into a dialog with the existing structures and develops a great unity. Large meadow areas characterize the area as an open center, a dense climatic forest adjoins in the west. The third element is the neighborhood park in the Green Ring. The Green Ring forms the new edge of the city – it functions as both a green living room and a promenade and is made up of a wide variety of garden structures. Community gardens for urban farming as well as play and picnic areas are located here. The core area for the exhibition will be the promenade along the new development towards the RheinPark. The exhibition areas form clod-like layers on the existing park. The event venue and the flower hall each form the end points.

In order to strengthen the city center as a retail location, the city of Schleswig wants to upgrade and redesign the public space. The winning design understands the inner-city spatial sequences as an urban continuum that is united by a uniform design language and an overarching urban floor concept, without sacrificing a differentiated and identity-creating design of the various spaces. The urban flooring areas differ in terms of their bond and laying direction, but draw on a common vocabulary through coordinated colors and materials. The core material in large areas, including Capitolplatz, is formed by natural stone slabs laid in rows that span from façade to façade. A terraced town square defines the newly established entrance square in the west. These Schlei terraces mediate between the different levels as a wide ramp staircase. Striking slabs lead on to Capitolplatz, which presents itself as an architecturally framed “green hall”.
