As part of the infrastructure expansion for the Rhine-Ruhr Express in the Düsseldorf city area, an interdisciplinary design competition was held for the integration of noise barriers. The jury of experts has now selected three winning designs and found two other works to be worthy of recognition. You can find out more about the competition here.

Deutsche Bahn is expanding the Rhine-Ruhr Express with a view to the green transport transition. This is one of the most relevant rail infrastructure projects for North Rhine-Westphalia. For the Rhine-Ruhr Express, rail traffic between Dortmund and Cologne is being brought up to the latest state of the art as an important main traffic axis.
The construction of noise protection measures is mandatory for the realization of the project due to the Noise Immission Control Act. For Düsseldorf’s urban area, however, this means that in future an inner-city route with around twenty-five kilometers of noise barriers up to six meters high will run right through the city. So how should such a major urban planning challenge be dealt with?
The rather novel urban planning and design task prompted the state capital of Düsseldorf (represented by the art commission) to organize an interdisciplinary, restricted design competition in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn. The aim was to integrate noise barriers into the cityscape and generate added value. The competition was to produce innovative designs that creatively combine noise protection with sustainable urban development concepts.
Twelve interdisciplinary teams submitted their designs. On the one hand, the jury was made up of experts from various fields. On the other hand, two representatives of urban society advised the jury in order to involve the public.
On March 10, 2023, the jury awarded prizes to three designs. As all solutions were equally convincing, no further ranking was made. These are the winners:
- “LEHM folded earth” by Zentrum für Peripherie (Ute Reeh), haascookzemmrich STUDIO 2050 (Martin Haas), Lehm Ton Erde Baukunst GmbH (Martin Rauch), knippershelbig GmbH (Dr. Matthias Oppe), SnW Ingenieure GbR (Dr. Jan Mittelstädt), Bosch & Partner GmbH (Dr. Dieter Günnewieg), Anika K. Gasthof (TU Berlin), Institute of Ecology, Department of Ecosystem Science, TU Berlin (Anika K. Gasthof), Lehmbau Lovis UG (Christian Hansel), knp.Bauphysik (Christoph Hämmerling)
- “FERALcatalyst” by EiSat GmbH (Karen Eisenloffel), constructconcept Architecture & Consulting (Michelle Howard), Studio erde – office for Anthropocene landscape (Marcel Troeger), Anna Lundqvist, Ingo Vetter
- “KON TAKT ZONE” by green noise (Ursula Damm), Dr. Klaus Fritze, Station C23 – Arch. und Landschaftsarch. Part. MBB (Rudolph Langner, Prof. Dr. Sigrun Langner, M. Rudolph), Andreas Hecker (Bauhaus University Weimar), Felix Bonowski
These are the two awards:
- “Sound(t)rack” by MVRDV B.V. (Sven Thorissen), Nordwestuckermark (Tilo Schulz), WH-P Ingenieure (Florian Kaim), Mingzhu Nerval Landschaftsarchitektur (Antoine Nerval)
- “Just stop noise” by fabulism (Giulia Pozzi, Mirko Andolina), Philippe Rahm architectes (Philippe Rahm), Studio Fabian Knecht (Fabian Knecht), Bollinger und Grohmann GmbH
In the next step, the winning teams will be invited to develop their designs in more detail. The ideas for the noise barriers will be elaborated until they can be implemented. The City of Düsseldorf and Deutsche Bahn will continue to work together on this.
All designs submitted for the design competition can be viewed at Düsseldorf City Hall until the end of May. Guided tours can also be booked. The winning designs will then be presented to the political committees in April and May.
