The name of the Indian architecture firm “Material Immaterial Studio” is not the only reference to its interest in mass. The architects are also concerned with it: Using small concrete models, they explore the relationship between mass and empty space. Their study “Spaces” consists of nine square models that celebrate the architect’s favorite material – in reference to the greats of modernism such as Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright or Oscar Niemeyer, who built the Villa Savoye, Fallingwater and the whole of Brasília in concrete. The miniatures function independently or in combination. As an ensemble of 3 x 3 concrete cubes, new squares and spaces are created. This also results in the “Kund” – an inner courtyard formed from the sum of the models.
