Landscape Architecture as Living Infrastructure in Laval
The Espace citoyen des Confluents project in Laval is an exceptional example of how landscape architecture can become part of a city’s ecological and social infrastructure. Designed by Projet Paysage in collaboration with Cardin Julien, the project transforms a former petrochemical industrial site into a regenerative public space.
The new complex connects a library, cultural spaces, and community facilities with a sprawling landscape park that centers on water, biodiversity, and community.
From Industrial Brownfield to Regenerative Urban Landscape
The site was once forested, later used for agriculture, and subsequently served as the location for a petrochemical plant operated by BASF. Despite soil remediation, the area remained a degraded industrial wasteland for a long time.
With the Espace citoyen des Confluents, this site has been completely reimagined: The design is founded not on development alone, but on the restoration of ecological processes.
In this process, the landscape itself becomes active infrastructure.
Water as a Central Design Element
An essential element of the project is integrated water management. Rainwater and surface runoff are fully captured on-site and channeled through a network of:
- permeable paths
- drainage ditches
- retention basins
- wetlands
.
The basins also serve as biotopes and promote the return of plant and animal species. During heavy rainfall, excess water is discharged in a controlled manner into the urban drainage system.
This creates a resilient landscape that connects climate, water, and urban space.







Landscape Architecture as a Public Experience Space
The project creates an almost forest-like atmosphere in the heart of the urban environment. Walking paths, viewpoints, and boardwalks guide visitors through the landscape and enable direct experiences of nature within the city.
More than 300 trees of 25 different species have been planted. Complemented by spontaneous vegetation and ecological corridors, the landscape continues to evolve.
The atmosphere changes with the seasons, transforming the site into a dynamic, living ecosystem.
Architecture and Landscape as a Unified Concept
From the very beginning, the buildings and open spaces were developed together. The architectural concept by Cardin Julien andthe landscape architecture by Projet Paysage intertwine, creating a close connection between interior and exterior spaces.
The architecture is bioclimatically oriented along an east-west axis to make optimal use of passive solar energy. Pathways, openings, and outdoor spaces are precisely tailored to light, climate, and landscape.
The result is a public space with high spatial quality and a strong ecological identity.
Sustainability and Urban Regeneration
The project was certified to LEED v4 Gold and demonstrates how sustainable urban development can go beyond technical solutions.
Key ecological strategies include:
- complete stormwater retention
- Promotion of urban biodiversity
- Reduction of impervious surfaces
- natural cooling through vegetation
- Reuse of existing terrain features
The parking lot also became part of the ecological strategy: Its reduced impervious area minimizes heat islands and improves infiltration.





A New Social Hub for Laval
The Espace citoyen des Confluents is more than just a landscaping project. As part of the Laval 2035 urban development strategy, it strengthens the connection between previously isolated neighborhoods and creates a new public gathering place.
A library, cultural offerings, paths, and natural areas together form an open space for socializing, exercise, and recreation.
Projet Paysage ’s Espace citoyen des Confluents impressively demonstrates how landscape architecture can become part of a city’s ecological, social, and climate infrastructure.
By transforming a former industrial site, a public space is created that promotes biodiversity, intelligently integrates water, and simultaneously enhances the quality of urban life.
