Important questions at this year’s Cultura Suisse are: What does the museum of the 21st century look like? Are arts and crafts threatened with extinction? How do we deal with architectural monuments in times of climate change? The aim is to find answers to these and other pressing questions through discussions with visitors. The exhibitors will present new technologies and current developments in the areas of library and archive technology, big data, IT support, guiding museum visitors, digitization and eventization, energy efficiency, promotion and research, photography and film, building technology, security, materials and machines, media presentation, augmented reality, museum infrastructure, museum construction and technology, museum management, pest control, cultural and museum apps, transport, packaging, storage, visual communication, staging, scenography, art and cultural mediation, auctions, preservation and protection of cultural assets, monument conservation, archaeology, building materials, historical gardening, restoration and conservation, taxidermy, maintenance and restoration as well as documentation and inventory. The target group of Cultura Suisse are professional visitors such as archaeologists, architects, archives, construction managers, authorities from municipalities, cities and cantons, monument caretakers, gallery owners, church caretakers, conservationists, media, museums, museum technicians, planners, private monument owners, registrars, specialists in the trades, students and schoolchildren.

The supporting program for this year’s Cultura Suisse is extensive and offers a panel discussion every day, for example on the topic of “The museum of the 21st century” or the significance of climate change for (architectural) monuments and the protection of cultural assets, but numerous lectures, forums, panels and conferences are also planned. For example, the symposium “Opportunities and pitfalls in circular building in existing buildings” complements the trade fair program. In addition, the 3rd Museum Marketing Day and the annual conference of the Swiss Association for Conservation and Restoration (SKR) will take place parallel to the trade fair. There will also be product presentations and demonstrations by craft associations. These demonstrations at the workplace are a specialty of Cultura Suisse; this year, the art of shingling will be presented and demonstrated. “The focus is on knowledge transfer. We now want to expand on this with the fourth edition and offer industry associations and specialist organizations ideal space at BERNEXPO for their event taking place at the same time in the immediate vicinity of the trade fair,” explains Exhibition Director Peter Plan from event-ex ag.

The Long Night of Museums in Hamburg could be experienced digitally last weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic. From home, visitors were able to take part in virtual tours, guided tours, musical experiences and live broadcasts in 38 museums via Facebook and YouTube. The Museumsdienst Hamburg proudly announced that over 10,000 people had taken advantage of the offer. A total of 74,000 people were reached via Facebook, a further 23,000 visits were made to the event website and almost 3,700 viewers watched the live broadcasts from six participating museums.

For example, visitors to the Museum of Medical History were able to look back from the coronavirus era to the cholera era. At the FC St. Pauli Museum, curators guided them through the Millerntor and the new permanent exhibition. In the composers’ quarter, the keys of Johannes Brahms’ piano resounded. And at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial, a live stream took them on a search for clues on the site. “The high level of commitment shown by Hamburg’s museums and the great response from participants to the digital broadcast of the Long Night of Museums in Hamburg far exceeded our expectations,” said a delighted Vera Neukirchen, Head of the Hamburg Museum Service. “Digital formats will be a valuable addition in the future.”

Originally, almost 900 events were planned for the Long Night of Museums in Hamburg’s 60 or so museums. They had to be canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus. But the organizers are full of praise: “We are thrilled by the creativity, determination and passion of the museum staff, who are creating digital access to our city’s natural science, history, music and art collections even during the necessary museum closures,” Vera Neukirchen continued. Incidentally, anyone who missed the live streams can watch them again and again on the museums’ websites.
