In their book “Reminiscence”, Benedict Esche and Benedikt Hartl portray the special relationship between building and architect. There, pioneering architects have their say, writing about their architectural influence and its impact on their own work. Here, the young architect Angela Deuber reflects on the power of resistance in architecture:

“The story of Hagia Sophia and its resilience is fascinating. It is a monumental example of how the impossible can become possible when an individual or a community pursues a goal and has a vision. The old Hagia Sophia was built, burnt down, replaced by a new church, destroyed again. Today’s Hagia Sophia was built under the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I by Anthemios of Tralleis and Isidoros of Miletus in just five years as an imperial church, throne room, place of worship and venue for imperial coronations. A short time later, it collapsed during an earthquake. It was rebuilt again in just five years and later collapsed twice more in whole or in part. It was looted and served as a Roman Catholic church, reverted to the Orthodox Church and eventually became one of the most important mosques in the Islamic world, until it finally became a museum. The power and charisma of this building does not come from outside, but lies in its essence, in itself. The Hagia Sophia was and is so powerful, monumental and fascinating that no matter how many times it collapsed, no matter how impossible the construction time for its construction seemed, it was always rebuilt, indeed, had to be rebuilt – regardless of the faith of the rulers at the time.

The Hagia Sophia is a unique synthesis of additive long space and absolute central space. It is an interpenetration of two spatial systems that create a new and complex structure. The two systems support each other and enable one space to be experienced more strongly through the other. The central space is dominated by the dome with a diameter of 33 meters and an apex height of 66 meters. It is supported by four belt arches, pendentives and pillars. The dome is adjoined to the east and west by two halved round buildings. The central building rests in itself and is oriented in all directions and towards the sky. The nave is around 80 meters long and 70 meters wide. From the vestibule in the west, the exonarthex, via the inner forecourt of the church, the narthex, and further across the central nave, the nave is oriented towards the apse in the east and forms galleries to the central space. The side aisles and galleries are non-directional side rooms against the background of the central space. This creates the expanse of the central space through the surrounding layers of space. The central space can appear light, as the four pillars can disappear into these layers. Both spatial systems are coherent in themselves and not interchangeable. Their overlapping and interpenetration create new complex worlds. The two worlds overlap and reinforce each other. They are – and obviously have been over the centuries – fascinatingly mysterious.”

Tailormade ACTIVE SURFACES™ in a large 100×100 centimetre format with a thickness of just 6 millimetres were used to create the 1,200 square meters of flooring. After nine months, the German testing institute LGA has confirmed that the thin 6-millimeter ceramic is safe to use in a floor area that is used by heavy vehicles and scissor lifts.

These innovative photocatalytic ceramic panels, researched and developed by the Iris Ceramica Group in collaboration with the Chemistry Department of the University of Milan and produced by the Fiandre brand, have been installed on all floors, in the lounge area, in the kitchen, in the service area and in the offices and common areas.

the 1,200 square meters of ceramic eco-active floor coverings installed reduce 1.6 kilograms of nitrogen oxides per year, which corresponds to the performance of 1000 square meters of real green space, and 5000 cubic meters of clean air, free of VOCs and unpleasant odors.

ACTIVE SURFACES™ guarantees hygiene and safety thanks to its easy-to-clean surfaces, and is over 99% antibacterial and antiviral, from the simplest to the most dangerous microorganisms. The antimicrobial properties are ISO certified and specifically tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is responsible for the current Covid-19 pandemic. The 94 percent effectiveness has already been tested and confirmed after four hours under low light.
