The architecture value chain is in the process of reinventing itself—digitally, from the ground up, layer by layer. What was dismissed as a pipe dream just a few years ago is now a cutthroat business sector. Those who don’t have a firm grip on processes, data, and intelligence will become subcontractors in their own industry. But how far along are we, actually, on the path to a fully digitized value chain? And: Who stands to benefit—and who will be left behind?

From the Drawing Board to the Data Network: The State of Digitalization in the DACH Region

Welcome to reality: While international leaders such as Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the Nordic countries have long been relying on digitized value chains, the DACH region is still moving forward with the handbrake on. Although there are numerous pilot projects, BIM standards, and funding programs, everyday life still looks like this: data is sent via email, plans are printed as PDFs, and construction progress is documented by hand on the job site. Germany excels in standards but rarely in courage. Austria and Switzerland show greater agility in certain areas, but even here, the widespread implementation of digital processes remains a work in progress.

The call for efficiency, transparency, and sustainability is unmistakable. Municipalities and building owners are demanding end-to-end digital processes—from the initial sketch to facility management. Yet the fragmentation of the industry leads to interface problems, data loss, and inefficiencies. Anyone coordinating a construction process today has to juggle isolated software systems, incompatible file formats, and legal gray areas. There is hardly any real collaboration on a shared data platform.

Policymakers have recognized the issue—at least in theory. Funding programs, BIM mandates for public projects, and research initiatives are being rolled out. Yet implementation remains slow. The reasons are manifold: a lack of IT expertise in design firms, a backlog of investments among small and medium-sized enterprises, and, not least, the fear of losing control. Sharing data means relinquishing power—and that is precisely a sensitive issue in an industry that insists on copyright and accountability.

At the same time, external pressure is mounting. International investors, digital general contractors, and software conglomerates are entering the market and setting new standards. Those who don’t keep up will lose contracts—and faster than most would like. The value chain is not only being digitized; it is also being globalized. And this poses uncomfortable questions for self-assured planners regarding their own role in the system.

The current situation is thus a paradox: The technical capabilities exist, the necessity is undisputed, yet implementation remains piecemeal. There is a lack of courage, reliable standards, and a culture of sharing. However, those who overcome these hurdles can unlock enormous potential—and not only survive the transition to a digital value chain but also shape it.

BIM, AI, and Automation: The New Engines of Value Creation

Anyone who still believes today that digitalization in the construction industry is limited to the exchange of CAD drawings has been out of touch in recent years. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has long been more than just a 3D design tool. It is the foundation for an end-to-end, data-driven value chain—from the initial idea to the demolition of a building. But BIM alone is not enough. Only the integration of artificial intelligence, automation, and the Internet of Things (IoT) truly turns data into value.

AI-powered tools analyze design options, optimize material usage, and help identify the most sustainable solution from countless possibilities. Automated processes handle routine tasks: quantity takeoffs, clash detection, and scheduling. The construction site becomes a networked data field—sensors record temperatures, humidity, and material flows in real time and feed this data into the central model. This may sound like science fiction, but it has long been part of everyday life in pilot projects around the world.

Progress varies across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. While some large-scale projects are already consistently relying on BIM and automation, small and medium-sized enterprises remain skeptical. The reasons: the costs of the transition, uncertainty regarding liability, and fear of transparency. Yet the advantages are clear: fewer change orders, greater cost certainty, and higher quality. And last but not least: the ability to operate buildings as digital twins and continuously optimize their lifecycle.

The biggest innovations are currently emerging at the interfaces: AI algorithms that predict design errors; platforms that consolidate data from different trades; and cloud-based tools that allow international teams to work on the same model in real time. And: robots on the construction site that translate plans from the cloud directly into concrete and steel. The crux of the matter: those who don’t invest will be left behind. Value is created where data flows—not where it gathers dust in folders.

The architecture industry must decide: Does it want to be part of the digital ecosystem, or become a supplier to the major platform providers? The value chain is digitizing anyway—the only question is who will still be creating value in the end.

Sustainability Between Data Mania and Life Cycle Assessment

Hardly any other topic is discussed as vociferously as sustainability in the construction industry. But while green certifications and carbon footprints have long been considered standard practice, their implementation often remains vague. This is where digitalization could be a game-changer—if used correctly. Digital tools make resource consumption transparent, highlight opportunities for optimization, and enable a true circular flow of materials.

But the road ahead is rocky. Many digital solutions are piecemeal, isolated systems with no connection to the overall value chain. Data is collected, but rarely analyzed in a meaningful way. The danger: a data frenzy without real added value. Sustainability becomes a checkbox item rather than a guiding principle for action. Yet the potential is enormous: digital building models could map the entire life cycle, from raw material extraction through use to demolition. Material passports, CO₂ footprints, and recycling rates could be automatically calculated and managed.

In practice, however, the complexity creates uncertainty. Who guarantees data quality? How are sustainability goals contractually defined and monitored? And how can ecological and economic interests be reconciled when the value chain involves dozens of stakeholders? There is a lack of binding standards, clear responsibilities—and often the will to actually change course.

International pioneers are showing how it can be done: In the Netherlands, for example, digital material databases are used to view buildings as reservoirs of raw materials and to factor in demolition from the very beginning. In Scandinavia, CO₂ footprints are integrated into planning models and automatically updated. The DACH region is lagging behind, though there are at least some initial initiatives, such as Madaster, that are addressing the issue.

One thing is clear: Without digitalization, sustainability in construction remains nothing more than smoke-and-mirrors politics. With it, sustainability becomes a measurable, controllable factor—provided the industry has the courage to question its own processes and business models. Only then will data translate into true sustainability, and the value chain become a value loop.

Technical Expertise, Power Dynamics, and the Future of the Profession

The digitization of the architectural value chain is not a sure thing. It requires technical expertise that goes far beyond traditional design skills. Those who want to succeed in the future must be able to interpret data, automate processes, and manage digital interfaces. The demands on architects are changing radically: they are becoming data curators, process architects, and facilitators within the digital network.

At the same time, power dynamics in the construction industry are shifting. Whoever controls access to data sets the rules of the game—and thus also determines the distribution of value. Major platform providers, software companies, and general contractors are positioning themselves as gatekeepers. For traditional architectural firms, this means: Either they invest in their own digital capabilities, or they will be reduced to mere extensions of the platform economy.

The debates surrounding data sovereignty, copyright, and algorithmic decision-making are therefore anything but academic. Who is liable for design errors when an AI tool makes recommendations? Who owns the data generated during the construction process? And how can we prevent an oligopoly of software providers from controlling the industry at will in the future? So far, there are hardly any answers—but time is running out.

Visionary ideas abound: from open-source standards to decentralized data platforms to blockchain-based value creation models. But the reality is often sobering. Proprietary systems, a lack of political will, and narrow economic interests are standing in the way of a major breakthrough. The danger: the industry will miss the chance to shape its own future—and become a pawn of global tech conglomerates.

The stakes are high for the architectural profession. Digitalization can liberate it—from routine, from a lack of transparency, from waste. But it can also lead to devaluation if planners fail to redefine their role as a creative, connecting, and shaping force. The future is not decided on the drawing board, but within the digital ecosystem. Those who understand this will stay in the game.

Global Impulses and Local Realities: Between Vision and Reality

A look beyond our borders reveals that the digitization of the architectural value chain is not a uniquely German phenomenon. Digital ecosystems are emerging worldwide, blurring the lines between planning, construction, and operation. In Asia, entire neighborhoods are digitally modeled before the first shovel hits the ground. In the U.S., venture-capital-backed startups are focusing on automated planning and construction processes that have little in common with traditional roles. And Europe, too, is discovering the potential of shared data spaces, for example through initiatives like the European Digital Twin or Gaia-X.

Yet the local reality remains contradictory. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, isolated solutions, a patchwork of federal systems, and a culture of mistrust toward centralized data platforms continue to dominate. The dream of a fully digitized value chain often falls short due to bureaucracy, data protection, and a lack of interoperability. At the same time, international competitive pressure is mounting—the industry faces a choice: keep up or be left behind.

Visionary voices are calling for a radical shift toward openness: open-source standards, open interfaces, and collaborative platforms. The reality, however, is that economic interests, liability issues, and political reluctance are slowing progress. The result: While global players establish new business models, the local construction industry often gets bogged down in petty details.

The challenge lies in embracing global trends without losing control over one’s own value chain. This requires technical expertise, political foresight, and above all: the courage to stray from the beaten path. Digitalization is not an end in itself—it is the tool for making architecture fit to meet the challenges of climate change, urbanization, and resource scarcity.

Those who digitize the architectural value chain must therefore not only master technology but also develop new forms of collaboration, governance, and value creation. Only in this way will digital transformation become more than just a buzzword—and architecture will remain what it has always been: a creative, social process.

Conclusion: The architecture value chain is digitizing—but not on its own

The digitization of the architectural value chain is inevitable—but it won’t happen on its own. It requires technical knowledge, strategic courage, and a willingness to rethink responsibility. Those who invest now will actively shape the industry’s future. Those who wait and see will become subcontractors in their own business. And that is precisely where it will be decided who creates value in the future—and who merely carries out tasks.

Federal Urban Green Prize 2022: The BMWSB is awarding the Federal Urban Green Prize for the second time. Focus 2022: the importance of urban greenery for climate adaptation.

The Federal Urban Green Prize will be awarded for the second time this year. The Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building is focusing on climate adaptation in 2022. The application period runs until the beginning of April.

The new Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building is continuing a recent tradition. Like its predecessors, it is awarding a Federal Urban Green Prize. For the second time, exemplary practical examples and projects are being sought and honored. This year, the focus is on climate adaptation. The application period for the Federal Urban Green Award 2022 runs until the beginning of April.

The award for exemplary practical examples is intended to encourage and inspire. It is intended to honor commitment to urban greenery and reward projects that invite imitation. It is not only the awarding of the Federal Urban Green Award that is of value, but of course also the media attention for projects and their actors. Because only when good examples from practice are shown and discussed do they encourage imitation. With this in mind, the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building is once again awarding the Federal Urban Green Prize this year.

With this prize, the Ministry wants to recognize in particular projects that help to positively influence the urban climate. The ministry is therefore looking for examples of how the negative effects of extreme weather conditions can be mitigated. This includes heavy rainfall events as well as extreme heat development in cities. In order to mitigate these consequences of the changing climate locally and also to protect the climate, greenery in the city is of great importance. There are many ways in which urban greenery can make an important contribution to ensuring that our cities remain liveable.

The new Federal Minister

As the new head of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building, Klara Geywitz is responsible for the Federal Urban Green Award 2022 for the first time. She sees climate change as a stress test for our cities and is campaigning for more trees, soil and biodiversity. Karla Geywitz also points out how important trees are for a better urban climate. However, she also sees the need to unseal surfaces. After all, only open ground can absorb heavy rainfall and reduce flooding. But the quality of our surfaces in cities also plays a role in promoting biodiversity and preventing residential areas from heating up. In this broad field of challenges, projects of the Federal Urban Green Award 2022 are intended to set an example. The new minister is therefore looking for pioneering work that is already shaping the necessary transformation of cities today.

The Federal Urban Green Award is a project that is closely linked to the White Paper on Urban Green. The White Paper, published in 2017, still guides the activities and efforts of the federal government to improve green infrastructure in cities. The relevant federal ministries receive support from institutions such as the German Association of Cities, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities and the German Association of Districts.

Depending on the funds available in the 2022 federal budget, a total of up to 100,000 euros will be available as prize money for the Federal Urban Green Prize this year. The winners will be selected by an independent jury. It will decide on the awards and recognitions in early summer 2022. In 2022, the jury for the Federal Urban Green Award will once again be made up of experts from the fields of garden and landscape architecture, climate adaptation, urban development and urban planning. Representatives of the leading municipal associations and the Federal Ministry of Building will also be involved. The prizes will be awarded in Berlin in September 2022.

Practice and research

The Federal Urban Greenery Award 2022 is not only looking for completely new, creative solutions for dealing with urban greenery. Tried and tested concepts that show how urban greenery can be adapted to the climate and remain vital under current conditions are also important. As the Federal Ministry is not only interested in practical work in municipalities, cooperation with research institutions is also being sought. After all, we are not yet at the stage where our knowledge is sufficient. Cooperation with research on the subject of urban green is of great importance. Against this background, research work will also be honored as part of the Federal Urban Green Prize 2022.

Who can apply?

This year’s Bundespreis Stadtgrün is once again aimed at cities and municipalities of all sizes. However, they must have at least 3,000 inhabitants and be located in Germany. Realized projects from city and municipal cooperations are also welcome. These products of inter-municipal cooperation can also receive an award at the Federal Urban Green Award. Planning offices, citizens, universities, research institutions, initiatives or associations can also apply for the award. However, they must cooperate with their respective municipality. Although the Federal Prize for Urban Greenery 2022 is awarded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building, applications must be submitted to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development. This institute will once again implement the Federal Award this year and provide technical support.

The competition for the Rosentalturm Basel on the exhibition grounds has been decided. The “Rooseli” design by Herzog & de Meuron won over the jury. A public open space, a free-standing pavilion and a grove of trees are intended to bring the Rosental site back into the focus of the area. Find out what else is planned here.

A new quarter with 950 apartments is to be built on Dreilingsweg in the north-west of Munich. The urban and landscape planning competition for the district was won by MLA+ and Lohrengel Landschaft, both from Berlin. The Tadao Ando Campus and Tower is being built in Düsseldorf. As the city’s future landmark, the architecture is intended to be a symbiosis of high-tech and nature. The Mall Environmental Prize is to be awarded to final theses in the fields of rainwater management and blue-green-grey infrastructures. The Roland Mall Family Foundation intends to award the prize annually from now on. Young scientists can apply for the first award in 2023 until March 31. More about the environmental prize here.

The thematic competition Europan 17 is aimed at young experts under 40 from the fields of urban planning, landscape architecture and architecture. Applications for this year’s edition of the competition are open from March 2023. Here we report on the theme, aim and previous locations of Europan.
