Tatiana Bilbao at the Architekturforum Aedes in Berlin

Until June 29, the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin is showing an exhibition entitled “en común”. This exhibition by Tatiana Bilbao Estudio shows possibilities of coming together and living together in harmony as well as connections between public and private space. For over a decade, Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao and her interdisciplinary office Tatiana Bilbao Estudio have been exploring questions of building, living, housing and working together. In “en común”, which can be translated as “together”, she shows large-format hand drawings, collages and models of eight realized and ongoing international projects.

“En común”: visions of living and coming together

“En común” refers to the various ways in which projects and designs can be created together with users, construction groups and other architecture firms. The elements of the exhibition show visions of future, but also present-day living. The focus is on people coming together. At the same time, there are many details and an appreciation of historical structures and materials. Sustainable construction methods and materials play just as important a role in the exhibition as the social aspects of architecture.

“A city unites an infinite number of cities, each of which is shaped by its inhabitants and the spaces created within them. Every sidewalk, every streetlight, every building defines the city. In this sense, every moment of encounter and togetherness also defines the city. This can be in the park, at the market, in a laundry or at school,” say Tatiana Bilbao and Ayesha S. Gosh, architects from Tatiana Bilbao Estudio. In their projects, the architects create precisely such spaces in which users and residents can organize themselves to live and work together.

About the architect

Tatiana Bilbao was born in Mexico City in 1972. She founded her architectural practice in Mexico’s capital in 2004. The work of Tatiana Bilbao Estudio always focuses on the context in which the projects are located. The architects in the team apply multidisciplinary perspectives to their projects, which range from master plans to affordable housing projects. An important goal of Tatiana Bilbao’s work is to make a contribution to the respective environment. At the same time, she aims to respond flexibly to the ever-changing needs of the urban context by integrating social values, collaborative approaches and sensitive design ideas.

Before founding her office, Tatiana Bilbao was a consultant at the Ministry of Development and Housing of the Government of Mexico City. There she concentrated on urban development. Her numerous awards include the Emerging Voice Award from the Architecture League of New York in 2010, the Berlin Art Prize in 2012, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture from the LOCUS Foundation in 2014 and the Marcus Prize Award in 2019. Now she has also won the AW Architect of the Year Award 2022.

The exhibition on Isamu Noguchi is also interesting. Or: Tatiana Bilbao‘s exhibition at the Architekturzentrum Wien, which runs until February 2022 and was reported on by our colleagues from Baumeister.
