The European Stone Festival took place in Strasbourg in 2015. From June 26 to 28, around 120 stonemasons and sculptors from 15 countries made the forecourt of the famous cathedral their workplace. On the theme of “The Message of Romanesque Baumeisters and Rhenish Mysticism”, they carved sculptures out of sandstone, which could later be purchased at auction.
Strasbourg provided the perfect backdrop for the work on natural stone, but also for the next generation. Many young people found their way to the traditional craftsmen in the lively tourist town of Strasbourg. Martina Hartwich-Wolf from the Strassacker art foundry, a partner of the festival, believes: “Some young people have become interested in this profession precisely because of the task and its realization.” From skulls to reliefs and consoles to mythical creatures, the theme was realized in sandstone measuring 20 x 30 x 30 cm.
