The first construction phase of the megaproject in New York is complete. Franken-Schotter has produced the 3D façade elements of a skyscraper.
Hudson Yards is the name of the construction project in which 15 skyscrapers have been under construction on the western edge of Manhattan since 2011. The buildings are intended to establish themselves as a new business center and, according to the plan, will mainly house offices. It is the largest development in New York City since the Rockefeller Center. Construction work began in 2012 and the first of two construction phases has now been completed – and with it the façade of the 35 Hudson Yards skyscraper.
With a height of 308 meters and 72 floors, the residential and hotel tower is one of the tallest buildings in the city. It was designed by the famous architect David Childs, who is also responsible for the One World Trade Center at Ground Zero. Childs fitted 35 Hudson Yards with a characteristic curtain wall made of glass and three-dimensional natural stone elements.
Franken-Schotter, now the largest producer of Jura limestone in the world, has manufactured around 25,000 individual elements since October 2016 and has now delivered the last of them. The material is yellow Jura limestone from the Kaldorf quarry. Franken-Schotter designed the elements, extracted the necessary natural stone, manufactured the elements using 5-axis CNC production and assembled them in the factory. They consist of two to five individual stones. All visible edges are ground using robot technology to achieve a uniform cut.
35 Hudson Yards is scheduled for completion in 2019 and already has the prospect of Leed Gold certification. This program aims to “strengthen and promote the high performance of sustainable buildings”.
The environmental properties of the Jura limestone also contribute to the certification of the skyscraper – Franken-Schotter is certified in its own environmental product declarations. The company had these issued for both the façade and floor slabs. The project in New York is particularly important for Franken-Schotter because of its size, not so much because of its internationality – according to its own information, the company exports to 50 countries and generates 60 percent of its sales abroad.
