Almost at the very tip of the Bavarian Forest, Freyung will host the 2023 State Garden Show. Here, the close relationship between the people, their region and their landscape can be experienced.

Almost at the very tip of the Bavarian Forest, close to the border with the Czech Republic, Freyung is hosting the 2023 State Garden Show. From the highest state garden show in Bavaria, the view sweeps into the distance. At the same time, the close relationship between the people, their region and their landscape can be experienced.

The diversity of the Bavarian Forest

High up on the heights of the Bavarian Forest, in the border triangle of Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria, lies the town of Freyung. This means it is closer to the border with the Czech Republic than Passau, which is over 30 kilometers away. Originally planned for 2022, the Bavarian State Garden Show 2023 is now coming to Freyung. From 25.05 to 3.10.2023, the small town will welcome visitors from near and far. They should experience the Bavarian Forest as it is: down-to-earth, tradition-conscious, innovative, forward-looking and beautiful. Over the course of many years, many committed people in Freyung have contributed their creativity to present the forest and the expanse in an inspiring liaison.

The 800-metre-high Geyersberg forms the center of the State Garden Show. It is being developed from the tourist center and recreational area of the town of Freyung into a forward-looking landscape park. In a first step, it will become the site of the 2023 State Garden Show, after which many of the facilities built for the show will remain permanently and enrich the region in the long term. These include a forest trail that surrounds the entire grounds of the horticultural show and attracts visitors to the forests around the Geyersberg. A meadow trail will also be preserved, allowing visitors to experience blooming landscapes with typical flora and fauna. The Freyung 2023 State Garden Show will reflect the diversity of the Bavarian Forest. And thus also present the people of the region, who are traditionally closely connected to their landscape.

Competition for the Freyung State Garden Show

An urban planning, open space planning and structural engineering ideas and realization competition represents an important milestone on the way to the Bavarian State Garden Show. Conceived at the time for 2022, the competition called for ideas for the garden show and thus for one of the key urban development projects of the future. In the end, the competition jury awarded two prizes and two commendations. These included the design by plancontext gmbh landschaftsarchitekten with architects GATE Gussmann Atelier. And the ideas of geskes.hack Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH with Kolb Ripke Architekten Planungsgesellschaft mbH were awarded a second prize. Two commendations went to the offices QuerfeldEins and A24 Landschaft.

Although the entries submitted were all of a high standard, none of the designs presented completely convincing solutions. In particular, the arrangement and landscape integration of the required parking spaces was not satisfactory. The ideas for areas between the Glasbläserhütte, the GESA clinic and a lift station were also discussed critically by the jury. Accordingly, it recommended revising the two best-placed designs.

plancontext as the winner

Since 2018, the landscape architects from plancontext gmbh have been working together with the architects GATE Gussmann Atelier from Berlin and the plant planner Hanne Roth from Ingolstadt on the design of the State Garden Show in Freyung. This involves around 20 hectares, the redesign of which offers the opportunity to highlight and strengthen the potential of the Geyersberg district as a recreational area and tourist attraction.

The working group led by the landscape architects from plancontext is pursuing the goal of transforming the agricultural and forestry areas on the hilltop of Geyersberg into a forward-looking landscape park. All facilities and stakeholders on the Geyersberg will be involved. The existing leisure facilities will also be included in the new plans, as they will also benefit from the Freyung 2023 State Garden Show.

During the qualification of the new landscape park on the Geyersberg, the growing need for closeness to nature and experiencing nature has emerged as the greatest potential. Against this backdrop, regional characteristics will become the design leitmotif of the garden show. This includes the natural and cultural landscape of the Bavarian Forest as well as its traditional crafts, glassblowing, customs and local cuisine.

Tour of the Freyung State Garden Show

In spring 2023, visitors will be greeted by colorful flower arrangements at the main entrance to the State Garden Show in Freyung near Burgberg. From there, the route leads through various themed gardens where visitors can stop and enjoy the view. The route continues through meadow orchards, along the edges of which you can learn more about regional agriculture with its meadows and forests. The gardens on the castle hill frame the area with various plantings. Opposite the main entrance, the western area of the Freyung State Garden Show opens up. Here, the region will take center stage in the meadow park before the forest gardens with a focus on environmental and nature conservation follow.

Those who bring more of an urge to move with them to Freyung can let off steam on a large climbing playground or exercise course. In addition to a cultural supporting program, the Bavarian State Garden Show 2023 will also feature the winning objects from an art competition. The forest gardens finally begin at the highest point of the garden show. From here, the mixed mountain forest shows its magical and tranquil side. Here, the special features of the Bavarian Forest can be experienced in a very special way.

Visit the Bavarian State Garden Show in Freyung from 25.05 to 03.10.2023.

The State Garden Show in Freyung is not the only one that has been postponed from 2022 to 2023. Bad Gandersheim is also not hosting a horticultural show until 2023. Read more about this here: State Garden Show Bad Gandersheim

Blockchain technology is often associated with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, but has many more applications, particularly in the area of mobility. Blockchain is a decentralized database that records transactions transparently and tamper-proof. In mobility, this technology opens up new opportunities to optimize transport networks, prevent fraud and increase efficiency. Blockchain provides a secure platform for managing the data and transactions that occur daily in complex transportation systems.

Fun fact: According to a study by Deloitte, blockchain technologies in the transport sector could generate global savings of up to 30 billion US dollars by 2030.

Blockchain is based on several principles that make it particularly suitable for use in mobility.

Decentralization

Instead of a central database, information is stored in a network of nodes. This decentralization makes the system resistant to failures and manipulation.

Transparency

Every transaction is recorded in the blockchain and can be viewed by all network participants. This promotes trust and prevents fraud.

Security

Cryptographic encryption and consensus mechanisms make the blockchain virtually tamper-proof. This is particularly important for sensitive data such as ticketing information or payment details.

Smart contracts

Smart contracts are self-executing contracts that are executed automatically when certain conditions are met. They automate processes such as payments, bookings or insurance claims.

Practical example: A blockchain-based car sharing system could use smart contracts to only grant access to vehicles once payment has been confirmed.

Blockchain offers a wide range of applications that can make mobility safer, more efficient and more transparent.

Digital ticketing and payment processing

Blockchain enables a tamper-proof and transparent ticketing system for public transportation. Users can purchase their tickets digitally without having to rely on central providers.

Car sharing and ridesharing

Decentralized platforms could make carsharing and ridesharing services more efficient by enabling the booking, payment and handling of journeys directly between users.

Logistics and supply chains

In logistics, blockchain can be used to track the transportation of goods and prevent manipulation in the supply chain. Every movement of a delivery is recorded in the blockchain, which increases transparency.

Traffic management and parking systems

Blockchain can make traffic management systems more efficient by providing real-time data on traffic flows and parking options. Users could reserve and pay for parking spaces via decentralized platforms.

Practical example: a pilot project in Vienna is using blockchain to securely manage parking tickets and make the process more transparent.

The introduction of blockchain in mobility offers numerous advantages that benefit both users and operators.

Transparency and trust

Blockchain increases transparency by making all transactions publicly visible. This creates trust between users and providers and reduces fraudulent activities.

Fraud protection and security

Cryptographic encryption makes the blockchain secure against manipulation. This protects users from fraud and operators from financial losses.

Increased efficiency

Blockchain automates processes such as payments and bookings, saving time and costs. Smart contracts make it possible to minimize administrative tasks and speed up processes.

Data integrity

Data stored in the blockchain cannot be subsequently changed. This ensures that all information remains correct and trustworthy.

Expert opinion: According to a study by PwC, blockchain-based systems could reduce operating costs in the transportation sector by up to 15 %.

Despite its advantages, there are also challenges that need to be overcome when introducing blockchain in mobility.

Scalability

Blockchain technology reaches its limits with high transaction volumes. Cities with busy transportation systems need to ensure that the technology can be scaled.

Energy consumption

Blockchain systems, especially those with proof-of-work consensus mechanisms, consume significant amounts of energy. This is at odds with the sustainability goals of many cities.

Legal and regulatory issues

The introduction of blockchain in mobility requires a clear legal framework, particularly with regard to data protection, liability and contract law.

Acceptance by users and operators

The implementation of new technologies requires time and acceptance from users and operators. Transparent communication about the benefits and functionality of blockchain is crucial.

Expert opinion: According to a survey by Gartner, 40% of companies consider regulatory uncertainty to be the biggest obstacle to the introduction of blockchain.

Vienna: Blockchain for parking systems

In Vienna, blockchain is being used to digitize parking management. Users can reserve and pay for parking spaces and extend their parking times, all via a decentralized platform.

Seoul: blockchain for local public transport

In Seoul, the city is testing a blockchain-based platform for public transportation that makes ticketing and payment processing more secure and transparent.

Rotterdam: logistics with blockchain

Rotterdam is using blockchain to make logistics chains in the port more efficient. Every movement of containers is recorded in the blockchain, which increases transparency and prevents fraud.

The further development of blockchain technology will continue to revolutionize mobility in cities.

  1. Integration with IoT: IoT devices could be connected directly to the blockchain to capture and analyze traffic flows and vehicle data in real time.
  2. AI-powered analytics: AI could use blockchain data to analyze traffic flows and create predictive models for more efficient mobility
  3. Smart contracts for insurance: Insurance claims could be automated and processed faster by relying on blockchain-based smart contracts.
  4. Decentralized mobility platforms: Blockchain could serve as the basis for platforms that connect users* directly with providers* and eliminate the need for centralized intermediaries.

Future outlook: In Dubai, a blockchain system is being developed that integrates traffic management, insurance and ticketing into a single platform to make the city’s mobility more efficient and transparent.

Blockchain technology offers enormous opportunities to make mobility in cities safer, more efficient and more transparent. From digital ticketing and car sharing to logistics and traffic management – blockchain creates trust and optimizes urban processes. Despite the challenges, particularly in terms of scalability and legal issues, blockchain has the potential to fundamentally transform mobility and make cities smarter and more sustainable.

Concluding thought: Blockchain is more than just a technical trend – it is a transformative force that will shape the mobility of tomorrow. A future in which transportation systems are transparent, efficient and connected starts with blockchain technology.
