Preparation for Parts I and II of the master craftsman’s examination in stonemasonry and stone sculpture was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was nevertheless successfully completed. The new full-time course at the European Training Center for Stonemasonry and Stone Sculpture will begin in September 2020. Registration is stillopen.
For over 25 years, the European Training Center for Stonemasonry and Stone Sculpture in Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge has been offering training, continuing education, and consulting services related to natural stone. Last year, the program was expanded to include preparation for Parts I and II of the master craftsman’s examination.
The result: All participants successfully passed the exams. The preparatory course is conducted according to a nationally standardized curriculum and concludes after nine months with exams administered by the Chamber of Crafts for Upper Franconia. Participants are taught all theoretical and practical knowledge in a hands-on manner through modules covering natural stone techniques, order processing, natural stone design, and the management and organization of a business. In addition to on-site experts, numerous instructors from the trades, industry, cathedral workshops, specialized agencies, and universities teach the course.
In addition to theoretical instruction, special emphasis is placed on hands-on practice in the workshop and laboratory. The Competence Center is also equipped with modern technology, such as a 5-axis machining center and a 3D laser scanner. The training is rounded out by field trips and work visits under expert guidance. Since the one-week study abroad program had to be canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the young master craftsmen will travel abroad as part of the upcoming course.
The next master craftsman preparation course begins on September 7, 2020, in compliance with general, mandatory hygiene measures. Those interested can receive advice—for example, regarding funding opportunities—by phone or email.
