The Bellevue di Monaco is known to Munich residents as a café and cultural center. But now there is also a Bellevue di Monaco furniture collection. The proceeds go to the initiative.
Every day, people from different backgrounds – locals, tourists and refugees – come together here. We are talking about Bellevue di Monaco, a residential and cultural center in the heart of Munich. In 2014, cultural workers rescued the 1950s building from gentrification with great publicity. They transformed it into a flagship project with a signal effect, one of the most important socio-cultural locations in the Bavarian capital. Upstairs, young refugees live on five floors, while the first floor houses a café with a gallery. The cultural spaces of Bellevue di Monaco are located in the rear building at Müllerstraße 2. A varied cultural program consisting of theater performances, small concerts and readings is offered here. Counselling services, language courses and training sessions round off the program.
“Piece by piece” is the name of the furniture collection that architect Matthias Marschner and designer Michael Geldmacher, both members of the Bellevue di Monaco initiative, developed together with refugees, Munich students and interested volunteers for the café’s guest room.
The collection includes modern, high-quality chairs and tables in light and dark wood with a gold-plated tubular steel frame. Design connects: The furniture pursues the participatory goal of the initiative. A shape was developed for the tables that picks up on the basic theme of “meeting place” through its diverse combination options, and even promotes it. Everyone can have their say at the triangular tables and the surface can be extended quickly and flexibly.
As part of regular workshops, the furniture is assembled, coated and decorated with individual motifs by refugees, the initiators and volunteers. Each piece is unique and bears the signature of its makers. No previous professional training is required. This was particularly important to the initiators. The motto is to take part, get involved, lend a hand and, most importantly, have fun.
The furniture has been available to buy since January 2019. One hundred percent of the sales generated go to Bellevue di Monaco eG.
