The German Natural Stone Archive at the European Training Center for Stonemasons and Stone Sculptors in Wunsiedel comprises over 6,000 sample slabs and 1,500 mineral specimens from over 100 countries. This makes it the largest collection of its kind in the world. Participants visit and use the archive during the two-day course Recognizing and understanding stone.

After each theoretical block, they will visit the collections to visually illustrate what they have heard. Participants learn about the structure of minerals and rocks, their systematics, properties and characteristics. They make microscopes and take a trip to the in-house testing laboratory. After two days, they will be able to identify and classify rock types and analyze them for use. Klaus Heinl, state-certified stone technician, master craftsman and restorer in the stonemasonry trade, leads the training course.

Terminus stations are like bottlenecks. This is nothing new. In some cities, underground tunnels now enable faster transit. Now a study shows that a long-distance rail tunnel in Frankfurt is also feasible. This would bring major improvements in the middle of the German rail network.

A new study shows that a rail tunnel can also be built in Frankfurt am Main. In the near future, trains could not only rush through the long-distance train station at Frankfurt Airport. The route through the city center of the Main metropolis will also be faster. An underground station and a long-distance rail tunnel could make this possible. A current study shows that their construction is technically and financially feasible. The megaproject could be completed in around ten years.

The new feasibility study is not the first. Frankfurt 21 was already under discussion many years ago. Just like in Stuttgart, those responsible in Frankfurt also considered a tunnel solution. They also wanted to rebuild their train station and cut a tunnel through the city. This Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel was intended to save time for trains traveling through the city on the Main. The idea did not succeed. The project was considered too expensive and was therefore rejected. Now the idea has resurfaced. Now at least some of the train traffic is to be moved 35 meters underground. This is a major change for one of the most important hubs of German rail traffic.

Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel brings benefits above and below ground

The construction of the long-distance rail tunnel in Frankfurt will not only benefit interregional long-distance traffic. The relocation of long-distance trains underground will also create new potential above ground. Overall, more trains will be able to call at Frankfurt am Main main station. As a result, bottlenecks will disappear and the Frankfurt transport hub will become more balanced and reliable. All public transport passengers will benefit from this. Local transport users in the Rhine-Main region will also soon be able to travel faster. This is important for Hesse’s Economics Minister Al-Wazir. He sees the new Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel as an opportunity to improve mobility in the region. This will not only benefit people on their daily journeys. Industries such as logistics, trade fairs and tourism also urgently need a better transport situation.

Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel and new stop

With a new long-distance rail tunnel in Frankfurt, long-distance trains could rush under the city on four tracks. The plans envisage tracks running from the west and east towards Frankfurt Central Station. They would then stop there at a new station: Hauptbahnhof tief. The underground stop is to be located under the southern part of the main station. However, it is still unclear exactly where the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel will run. Deutsche Bahn has examined a northern, central and southern corridor between the main station and the east of Frankfurt. The middle corridor lies beneath the high-rise buildings of the Main metropolis. However, these rest on foundations up to 50 meters deep. This does not make the construction of a tunnel easy. The northern corridor also encounters numerous structural obstacles. The best option is the southern corridor. It runs underground past the high-rise buildings to the main station. In addition, the future tunnel in the southern corridor connects twice to existing railroad lines.

The results of the current study show that the Frankfurt mainline tunnel and the underground station are technically feasible. And the costs are also manageable. With the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel project, Deutsche Bahn is making an important contribution to the introduction of the Deutschlandtakt. This is intended to connect the country’s major cities every 30 minutes. The new Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel will increase capacity at the Frankfurt am Main hub from 1,250 to 1,500 trains per day. That is an increase of 20 percent. The rail hub on the Main will thus become the central hub of the German rail network. It will relieve the German rail network of a chronic bottleneck. The project even has a European dimension. Whether trains are traveling from Berlin to Barcelona or from Prague to Paris, they will cross the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel. This makes Frankfurt a pulsating hub in the European network. This is reason enough to press ahead with the planning of this project.

The feasibility study shows that the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel is feasible. The approximately eight-kilometre-long tunnel 35 meters underground is by no means a simple project. On the contrary, the new mega-project presents the railroad with enormous challenges. Just how big these will be can be seenfrom the Stuttgart 21 project . The initially calculated construction costs of 2.5 billion euros are likely to become over eight billion euros. The new station in Stuttgart was initially scheduled for completion in 2019. Now the first trains may run in 2025.

Despite all the difficulties involved in such a major project, there is no alternative to the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel. Anyone who regularly travels by train knows the problems at this bottleneck. Traffic runs relatively smoothly until just before Frankfurt. The entrance to the dead-end station then slows everything down. Deutsche Bahn must therefore take action. It is now starting planning for the Frankfurt long-distance rail tunnel. Transparency is a top priority. An information event for interested parties has already been held to coincide with the presentation of the results of the feasibility study. And this will not be the last.

The status quo: AI meets general planner – magic or bone of contention?

What is missing is the courage to see AI not just as an additional feature, but as the central orchestrator of the entire planning and construction process.

The lack of interoperability between the numerous software solutions on the market remains a structural problem. While individual trades are often already digitally exemplary, data exchange in the general planning process regularly fails due to incompatible interfaces, proprietary formats and a lack of data sovereignty. AI can help to bundle and evaluate data volumes here, but without common standards, much remains piecemeal. As a result, potential is wasted, efficiency falls by the wayside and the digital divide grows.

Another obstacle: the famous fear of losing control. Many project managers fear that AI-supported systems could call their role into question or even replace it. The automated documentation of construction progress, defects and acceptances is also increasingly being taken over by AI. Image data, drone images and sensor measurements are evaluated in real time, deviations are detected and solutions are proposed. This not only saves time and costs, but also minimizes liability risks. This is an enormous competitive advantage, especially in projects with internationally distributed teams and complex supply chains.

Finally, AI opens up completely new possibilities for sustainability and resource conservation. Algorithms calculate the ecological impact of different construction methods in seconds, optimize material flows and suggest energy-efficient variants. In combination with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Life Cycle Assessment, a data-based planning world is emerging in which sustainability is not just a fig leaf, but an integral part of the process.

Digital expertise: what planners need to know in the future – and what they can forget

The introduction of AI into project management requires a radical rethink by everyone involved. Traditional project management knowledge remains important, but the key qualifications are undergoing a massive shift. In future, data expertise, process understanding and the ability to deal with AI systems critically and creatively will be in demand. These questions are not only of a legal nature, but also of a strategic nature. If you don’t have answers here, you risk becoming dependent on software providers and losing your own creative freedom in the project.

Communication within the team is also changing fundamentally. AI systems not only provide facts, but also interpretations and recommendations. Planners must learn to question these critically and place them in the context of the overall project. This requires a high degree of reflection and a willingness to question one’s own routines. In short, anyone who sees AI as an oracle has already lost – it is a tool, not a world view.

Last but not least, the ability to think in an interdisciplinary way will be a decisive success factor. In the AI-supported general planning process, the boundaries between architecture, civil engineering, IT and business management become blurred. Those who work in silos will be left out. The future belongs to networkers, lateral thinkers and data architects – not the administrators of the status quo.

Sustainability and responsibility: AI as a turbo – or as a risk?

The use of AI in the general planning process opens up huge opportunities for sustainability, efficiency and quality. However, it also harbors risks that should not be downplayed. One of the biggest challenges is the transparency of decision-making. When algorithms decide on resource allocation, construction methods or schedules, it must remain clear how these decisions are made. Black box systems are poison for trust and acceptance – both for clients and the public.

Another issue is the risk of algorithmic bias. When AI models are trained with faulty or biased data, they reinforce existing prejudices and blind spots. This shifts the responsibility of planners: they not only have to ensure the right processes, but also the quality and diversity of the data.

The ecological footprint of AI systems must therefore be assessed self-critically. Sustainability means not only planning green, but also digitizing green.

The governance question remains central. Who determines what goals an AI system pursues? How are ethical guidelines implemented? And who monitors compliance with these standards? Calls for regulation are getting louder, but legislation is lagging behind technological developments. This creates uncertainty and slows down innovation. At the same time, it is an invitation to the industry to set its own standards and become a pioneer instead of waiting for political guidelines.

Finally, the role of humans should not be underestimated. AI can automate many things, but it cannot assume responsibility. The final decision must remain with humans – even if there is increasing pressure to rely on algorithms. Planning remains a cultural, social and ethical task. AI is a tool, not a substitute for judgment and experience.

This has an impact on the international architecture debate. Those who are not involved in AI project management today will no longer be able to take part in global competitions tomorrow. The requirements for transparency, traceability and efficiency are increasing rapidly. Clients already expect digital evidence, simulations and automated reports – in real time, not just at the final acceptance stage.

At the same time, the risk of commercialization and monopolization of AI systems is growing. Global software providers are gaining more and more influence over construction processes and enforcing their own standards. For planners on site, this means that those who do not actively defend their own expertise and data sovereignty will become vicarious agents of external platforms. The choice is clear: help shape – or be shaped.

Ultimately, the question remains as to how the global discourse on ethical, social and ecological standards can be translated into practice. AI must not become an end in itself, but must be placed at the service of building culture. The general planning process is not a laboratory for technology freaks, but the backbone of the built environment. This is where we will decide how we work, live and live in the future – in Germany, Europe and worldwide.
