For the eleventh time, Callwey Verlag has organized the “Gardens of the Year” competition – one of the most important awards for private garden design in the German-speaking world. The 2026 competition once again impressively demonstrates how diverse, innovative and creatively sophisticated private gardens can be today. The award-winning projects range from natural retreats to architecturally shaped outdoor spaces.
A renowned jury selected the best realized private gardens from numerous submissions, which were implemented by landscape architects, garden designers and garden and landscape farmers. In addition to the main prize, four commendations, a newcomer award and a photography prize were awarded. The competition is supplemented by the “Architects’ Choice” category, which recognizes outstanding product innovations.
Garden and landscape in harmony
First prize goes to Daniel Berg GmbH for its project “The garden as an ideal continuation of a landscape” in Weggis in the Swiss canton of Lucerne.
The concept impresses with its sensitive embedding in the existing topography: the garden seems to literally grow out of the landscape. The materials, choice of plants and spatial composition take up the surroundings and develop a harmonious, flowing transition between built space and nature.
The jury particularly praised the clarity of the design idea and the consistent implementation down to the last detail.
Four projects with a strong signature
Four further projects were awarded commendations – each with its own distinctive design approach:
- LSLA GmbH (“Zuhause angekommen”, Switzerland)
A garden that creates a sense of security and identity – characterized by calm structures and a finely tuned planting plan. - CvB Gartendesign Christiane von Burkersroda (“Gartenpanorama in Szene gesetzt”, Munich)
Here, the garden becomes a stage: visual axes, water features and fire pits stage the landscape as a space for experience. - Stephan Maria Lang Architektengesellschaft (“In the beginning is the place”, Munich)
An architecturally shaped garden that was developed from the analysis of the site and closely interlinks the interior and exterior spaces. - WKM Landschaftsarchitekten GmbH (“Quiet garden with forest character”, Lower Rhine)
An atmospherically dense retreat that conveys tranquillity and naturalness with forest-like structures and a restrained design.
Fresh ideas from Weimar
The title of “Newcomer of the Year” was once again awarded to a young office: Draußen Daheim GmbH for its “Oasis of joie de vivre” project in Weimar.
The design impresses with its lightness and playful use of space and planting. At the same time, it shows how contemporary garden design can create quality of life – an approach that the jury would like to specifically promote.
When light becomes language
Not only the gardens themselves, but also their staging were awarded prizes. This year’s photography prize goes to Ferdinand Graf Luckner. His work has been shaping the visual perception of contemporary garden design for years.
The laudatory speech particularly emphasized how he succeeds in capturing atmosphere, lighting moods and spatial qualities – and thus not only documenting gardens, but interpreting them in a narrative way.
Innovative products for the garden
Garden design does not end with the design – it lives from materials, products and technical innovations. In the “Architects’ Choice” category, outstanding solutions were therefore once again awarded prizes, which were chosen by specialist planners via online voting.
First prize went to CUBIC OUTDOOR LIVING for the Floating Bar – an innovative concept in the field of outdoor kitchens and barbecue areas.
Further awards went to:
- TANTAN – Josef Hain GmbH & Co. KG for the pool FARAH
- KANN GmbH for the ProKlima Zero concrete paving block
- Schellevis for the Matrix grass concrete slab
- ADEZZ for the Stonecore planter collection
- Garpa for the Fontenay armchair
- SunSquare for the SQK-I triangular sail
- Knirps for the Apoll Shell Edition
These products impressively demonstrate how strongly innovation and design are interlinked in the garden sector.
Green publication
The accompanying publication “Gardens of the Year 2026” was published to coincide with the competition. On 336 pages , the book presents the 50 selected gardens, supplemented by over 400 color illustrations and garden plans. The author duo Konstanze Neubauer and Susanne Wiborg present the award-winning projects in detail and provide insights into modern garden design. Detailed information on the 50 most beautiful private gardens of 2026 can be found here in the accompanying publication.
The garden as an extended living space
The 2026 competition makes it clear that the private garden has long been more than just a green space. It is becoming an individually designed living space that combines architecture, nature and personal needs.
The award-winning projects show how important a clear idea, a sensitive approach to the location and the quality of implementation are. They provide inspiration – not just for professionals, but for anyone who wants to rethink their own garden.
