The six-hectare riverside park between the railroad tracks and Lake Constance is being redesigned. In the past, the area in a prime lakeside location was mainly used for commercial use and parking lots. Marianne Mommsen, lead manager of the project, described the design for “Neue Ufer Überlingen” as a cultural landscape perspective. The waterfront park and urban promenade represent opposing poles that are intended to redefine the waterfront along a stretch of 2.5 kilometers.
With this project, relais Landschaftsarchitekten focused on forward-looking topics such as climate change, biodiversity and the development of ecosystems. The park is landscape-oriented, while the promenade showcases historical urban structures. These careful new accents are intended to emphasize the urban and waterfront spaces.
Ecology and enjoyment of the landscape are at the forefront of “Neue Ufer Überlingen”. The concept focuses on synergies in order to take into account both the use of open space and ecological aspects in the narrowly tailored park. The result is a structurally rich landscape.
Instead of the former bank wall, there is now a varied bank topography with steep and shallower areas. The new alternating water zone promotes the dynamic exchange between water and land. At high tide, the lake is given more space, while site-specific ecological development is promoted. At the same time, the park offers space for exploration and playful appropriation.
With “Neue Ufer Überlingen”, the landscape architects at relais want to invite you to rediscover familiar spaces. The planting concept also follows this goal. The architects have combined the classic aesthetics of the park with elements of a cultural landscape. The result is a special appearance with various shrub plantings that echo the heat-loving bushes of the steep banks of Lake Constance. Ornamental shrubs, beach grasses and other species that were once common on Lake Constance have also been added.
The resulting ecological diversity creates a varied park experience that emphasizes the landscape of the shores of Lake Constance. According to relais, this concept is intended to give “the uncontrollable a concrete significance as a design tool for the park experience”.
The lakeside park and promenade in the historic town center of Überlingen were created as part of the Überlingen 2021 State Garden Show. Read more about the State Garden Show here.
The German Landscape Architecture Prize 2023 is already the 16th competition since the first award in 1993. The prize is concerned with socially and ecologically oriented settlement and landscape development as well as contemporary open space planning. Ecological, social and economic measures are necessary to tackle the challenges of our time.
This is why the German Landscape Architecture Award recognizes much more than just beautiful landscapes: it is about projects that address the ongoing climate change, the increasing scarcity of resources and the loss of biodiversity. Existing infrastructures that are adapted as well as socially conscious projects stand a good chance. Overall, the competition aims to promote a fundamental rethink and visionary action at all planning levels in order to enable the development of climate-resilient open spaces and landscapes.
“Neue Ufer Überlingen” shows how a successful use of landscape resources can be realized even in a limited space. The riverside park is an example of a well-designed open space that supports local ecosystems, promotes the urban climate in the face of climate change and focuses on biodiversity. It is also a successful and popular public open space.
The first prize in the German Landscape Architecture Award 2023 is already the second important award for the “Neue Ufer Überlingen” project. In 2022, it also received the Baden-Württemberg Landscape Architecture Award.
