In many coastal developments, vegetation is still introduced as a secondary layer, used to soften architecture, frame views, or provide ornamental continuity with the surrounding landscape. At Gokce Gemile Private Bay, a private island-style estate near Fethiye on the southwestern coast of Türkiye, this logic is reversed: vegetation is not a decorative addition but functions as a primary spatial infrastructure that defines privacy, movement, and spatial organization across a forested peninsula.

In contemporary coastal development, planting is often implemented only after architectural volumes and infrastructural systems have already defined the site. Within this sequence, the landscape becomes a corrective surface rather than an active spatial system. At Gokce Gemile Private Bay, however, vegetation is embedded in the initial design logic, forming the basis for how the estate is organized and experienced.
Vegetation as Spatial Infrastructure
The private island-style estate occupies a naturally defined peninsula of approximately 20,000 square meters, surrounded by the sea, rocky slopes, and mature Mediterranean vegetation. Instead of treating this Mediterranean landscape as a passive backdrop, the project engages it as a functional structure. Trees, shrubs, ground cover, and terrain features are understood as components of spatial organization rather than merely visual elements.
Three independent stone villas are distributed across the site. Their positioning follows existing vegetation patterns and topographic conditions rather than geometric order or visual alignment. In this sense, landscape architecture is not applied to the site after construction but forms part of the project’s initial spatial reasoning. Vegetation becomes the first layer of spatial organization. Mature trees are preserved wherever possible, and building positions are adjusted in response to existing root systems and canopy structures. A mature carob tree preserved on the site directly influenced the configuration of one of the villas. Instead of removing the tree, the building was adapted to fit around it. Under these conditions, vegetation as infrastructure functions not as a representation but as a spatial determinant.

Planted Depth and Spatial Continuity
Across the peninsula, vegetation defines spatial relationships through planted depth rather than constructed boundaries. Layers of pine, carob, wild shrubs, and coastal grasses mediate between open and enclosed spaces, creating a gradient of spatial separation.
This approach defines the private garden estate as a continuous landscape system rather than a collection of discrete garden areas. Gardens extend the existing forest structure into terraces, paths, and the surrounding zones of the villas. The landscape remains continuous, and spatial edges are experienced as transitions rather than fixed lines.
Within this framework, landscape architecture functions as an environmental system. Vegetation filters views, modulates acoustics, and slows movement, replacing conventional architectural mechanisms of enclosure and screening. Coastal living is therefore organized through ecological depth rather than physical separation.
Movement Through the Mediterranean Landscape
Circulation reinforces this spatial logic. Arrival occurs via a narrow access route embedded within dense vegetation. The site is not immediately revealed but unfolds through a sequence of filtered views, shaded transitions, and controlled openings. A discreet funicular connects the upper plateau with the shoreline, while a secondary forest path traverses the terrain. Both routes maintain direct engagement with the vegetation, ensuring that movement remains embedded within the Mediterranean landscape rather than detached from it. Vegetation, functioning as infrastructure, extends into the movement itself, structuring how the estate is approached, traversed, and understood over time, thereby reinforcing the geography-led spatial organization of the estate.

Gardens as a Spatial System, Not Decoration
Within Gokce Gemile Private Bay, gardens are an integral part of the estate’s spatial system rather than merely decorative compositions. Terraces, shaded areas, and transitional zones are positioned in relation to existing trees, slope conditions, and wind patterns, creating a landscape that is adaptive and site-specific. The private island-style estate is therefore defined not by individual garden rooms but by a continuous environmental structure in which vegetation determines hierarchy, orientation, and perception. In contrast to coastal developments where planting is used to heighten visual impact, vegetation here functions as a mechanism of restraint. It structures distance, limits visibility, and creates zones of acoustic and visual separation. Coastal living is defined by ecological depth rather than architectural exposure.
A Quiet Form of Luxury
Material choices reinforce the continuity between built form and landscape. Natural stone, reclaimed timber, and hand-forged metal elements are integrated without visual dominance, allowing the architecture to blend into the planted environment over time. Luxury is defined by shade, silence, distance, and the persistence of natural systems rather than by density or visual excess. The Mediterranean landscape remains active, shaping the spatial and sensory conditions of everyday life.
