The winners of the second Berlin company garden competition have been announced. Four companies impressed the jury with their innovative and sustainable concepts.
Big city noise, hectic pace, concrete – people who work in a big city often suffer from psychological problems such as depression or schizophrenia. Some Berlin employers have long since recognized that this problem can be alleviated by simple means. Based on the findings of British researchers at the University of Exeter, companies have created green spaces for employees to improve their general well-being.
The Berlin Company Gardens Initiative has now honored employers in the “Company Gardens 2018” competition. The open spaces were assessed based on the factors “design quality”, “environmental quality” and “social functions”. Four companies beat off the competition and emerged as winners in various categories. Berlin’s Senator for the Environment Regine Günther presented the winners with the prize on September 6, 2018: how could it be otherwise – a plant.
The feel-good factor and the health of employees are a top priority at Contag AG. For this reason, the company has built a garden area over the last ten years, which now holds the award for the best company area. The combination of table tennis tables, comfortable garden loungers and kitchen gardens makes the 1.4 hectare site in Spandau an award-winning overall concept. The company also promotes biodiversity by introducing bees to the company premises.
Green lung of the industrial estate
The metal processing company Juliwerk Berlin shows that industrial estates do not have to be dull and gray, but can be home to an impressive variety of native and subtropical plants. The winner in the company garden category created an area with seating areas, bee-friendly flowering plants and a raised bed where employees can grow fresh vegetables for their own consumption.
Sustainability in all areas
Fantastic summer weather, but you spend the whole day in the office? Employees at the American brewery Stone Brewing don’t have this problem. When the weather is nice, meetings simply take place in the shady “outdoor office”. But the site has many more advantages: The company took first place in the “commercially used outdoor facility” category, primarily due to its convincing sustainability concept. The area combines organic elements such as wood, stone, plants and water with industrial elements such as metal, concrete and glass and is also maintained without the use of any harmful substances.
The big crawl in the Malzfabrik
The jury awarded the Malzfabrik creative center a special prize for biodiversity. With a focus on sustainability, it revitalized an old industrial monument in which environmental, economic and social goals were implemented on an equal footing. The garden is enriched by bees, rainwater basins for irrigation and refreshment, as well as art and cultural events.
Martina Neis is studying for a master’s degree in media communication at the University of Würzburg. The adjacent site is currently home to the State Garden Show, which she frequently visits.
