In times of increasing urbanization and rising temperatures, innovative solutions for climate adaptation in cities are gaining in importance. One particularly effective measure is green roofs, which not only contribute to heat reduction, but also offer numerous other benefits for the urban environment.

Roof greening refers to the planting of roof surfaces with various plant species. Depending on the structure and maintenance intensity, a distinction is made between extensive and intensive green roofs.

Extensive green roofs:

  • Low build-up height (5-15 cm)
  • Low-maintenance plants such as sedum species, mosses and herbs
  • Low weight (60-150 kg/m²)
  • Low costs and minimal maintenance

Intensive roof greening:

  • Higher build-up height (from 15 cm)
  • Diverse planting with shrubs and even trees
  • Higher weight (180-500 kg/m² or more)
  • Similar to traditional gardens, requires regular maintenance

Urban areas are often characterized by so-called “heat islands”, where temperatures are higher than in the surrounding countryside. Green roofs counteract this by lowering the ambient temperature through transpiration and evaporation.

  • Plants evaporate water through their leaves, which leads to a cooling of the air
  • Green roofs absorb less solar radiation than conventional roofing materials
  • Reduce the heating of buildings and improve the microclimate

Studies show that green roofs can reduce the surface temperature by up to 40°C compared to conventional roofs. This leads to a significant improvement in thermal comfort both in the building and in the immediate surroundings.

In addition to temperature regulation, green roofs offer a number of other benefits:

Promotion of biodiversity

Green roofs create valuable habitats for flora and fauna in urban areas1:

  • Nesting sites for birds
  • Food sources for insects, especially bees and butterflies
  • Opportunity for rare and endangered plant species to colonize

Improved water management

Green roofs play an important role in urban water management:

  • Storage of rainwater (40-90% of precipitation)
  • Relief of the sewer system during heavy rainfall events
  • Reduction of the risk of flooding
  • Natural water filtration and improvement of water quality

Improvement in air quality

Plants on roofs contribute to improving air quality1:

  • Filtering pollutants and fine dust from the air
  • Production of oxygen
  • Binding of CO2, which helps to reduce the greenhouse effect

Improved sound insulation

The vegetation layer on green roofs acts as natural sound insulation2:

  • Reduction of noise pollution in urban areas
  • Improvement of sound absorption by up to 3 dB
  • Increasing the quality of life for city dwellers

Aesthetics and quality of life

Green roofs improve the cityscape and provide additional recreational areas1:

  • Creation of green oases in the city
  • Possibility of use as roof gardens or urban farming areas
  • Positive effects on the mental well-being of city dwellers

The realization of a green roof depends on various factors:

Statics and roof construction

  • Checking the load-bearing capacity of the roof (additional weight of 60-500 kg/m²)
  • Consideration of the roof pitch (optimal up to 45°, special systems required above this)
  • Analysis of the existing roof waterproofing and adaptation if necessary

Structure of a green roof

A typical structure consists of the following layers:

  • Roof waterproofing with root protection
  • Drainage layer
  • Filter fleece
  • Substrate layer
  • Vegetation

Plant selection

The choice of plants depends on various factors:

  • Climatic conditions
  • Roof pitch and solar radiation
  • Desired maintenance intensity
  • Ecological goals (e.g. promotion of native species)

Green roofs offer not only ecological but also economic benefits:

Energy savings

  • Reduction of energy requirements for cooling in summer by up to 75%
  • Improved thermal insulation in winter
  • Potential savings on heating and cooling costs

Extension of the roof service life

  • Protection of the roof waterproofing against UV radiation and temperature extremes

Financial incentives

Many cities and local authorities offer subsidy programs or tax breaks for green roofs:

  • Reduction of wastewater charges

An outstanding example of the successful integration of green roofs can be found in Basel, Switzerland. Since the 1990s, the city has been intensively promoting the greening of roofs:

  • Mandatory greening for new and renovated buildings with a roof pitch < 10°
  • Focus on native plant species to promote local biodiversity
  • Creation of habitats for various bird species and insects
  • Significant contribution to cooling the city

Other cities such as Copenhagen, Toronto and Singapore have launched similar initiatives and show how green roofs can be successfully integrated into urban planning.

Despite the numerous advantages, green roofs also face challenges:

Competition for roof space

  • Expansion of photovoltaic systems can make implementation more difficult
  • Innovative solutions: Combination of solar energy and green roofs
  • Synergy effects: Plants cool solar modules, modules protect vegetation

Raising awareness and providing information

  • Lack of knowledge among building owners and planners about advantages and possibilities
  • Need for educational work and provision of best practice examples
  • Integration into the education and training of architects and urban planners

Technical innovations

  • Development of lighter substrates for a wider range of applications
  • Improving water storage capacity and nutrient supply
  • Automated irrigation and maintenance systems for reduced maintenance costs

Green roofs are an effective measure to meet the challenges of climate change in urban areas. They contribute significantly to the reduction of heat islands, promote biodiversity and improve the quality of life in cities. Through targeted planning, promotion and awareness-raising, green roofs can become an integral part of sustainable urban development.

The future of green roofs lies in intelligent networking with other sustainable technologies and adaptation to specific local needs. As research and development progresses, the systems will become more efficient, cheaper and easier to implement. Cities that are early adopters of this technology are positioning themselves as pioneers in the field of green infrastructure and creating liveable spaces for future generations.

The “Home” project by French architects Harmonic & Masson and Comte Vollenweider Architectes is a first in Paris: it is the first residential building since the 1970s to reach a height of 50 meters.

The “grand ensembles”, the large French housing estates located on the periphery, do not have the best reputation. Time and again there are riots there, which have recently also reached the city centers. The authorities have a correspondingly allergic reaction: any building that is longer than 30 meters and has a repetitive arrangement of windows and balconies immediately brings the unpopular typology to mind. The last buildings date back to the 1970s, such as the “Olympiades” and “Front de Seine” estates in Paris. The city then stipulated that no building in the city center could exceed a height of 37 meters. The architectural idea of large housing estates seemed to have been forgotten.

Since 2011, residential towers up to 50 meters high and office buildings up to 180 meters high have been allowed to be built again. The “Home” project by French architects Harmonic & Masson and Comte Vollenweider Architectes is therefore a novelty: it is the first residential building since the 1970s to reach a height of 50 meters. It is located in the Paris Rive Gauche district, which is otherwise characterized by architectural banalities: if you stroll along the main axis of the district, the Avenue de France, monotonous shopping and office buildings line up one after the other. The new housing construction is a welcome change. Even the otherwise very critical Parisian newspaper “Le Monde” thought so.

The new residential building consists of two towers that are connected by a five-storey base and combine offices, private apartments, social housing and parking spaces. The often criticized monotony of large buildings was deliberately avoided: both the façades and the floor plans are varied and structured differently.

The two towers differ in shape and orientation: the first is stepped and 37 meters high, while the second consists of twisted prisms and rises 50 meters into the air. The resulting plasticity allows for an expressive façade design: instead of monotonous concrete slabs, the architects used silver or gold-colored aluminum panels. In addition to the playfulness of the façade, the geometry naturally allows for optimal lighting and a magnificent view of the city – everything here refers to the architecture of the new millennium. One is reminded of the architecture of the Ørestad district in Copenhagen.

The “old” towers of the city can be seen from the individual terraces of the apartments: the glazed archives of Dominique Perrault’s National Library from the 1990s and the eight blocks of the large “Olympiades” housing estate. New high-rise buildings are being planned by Edouard François and Jean Nouvel. The new housing development in Paris Rive Gauche is its forerunner – a mediator between past and future.

Submission to the “Houses of the Year 2025” competition

Every year since 2011, Callwey Verlag has honored outstanding single-family homes with the prestigious “House of the Year” architecture award. In 2025, architects are once again invited to submit their projects and thus become part of an impressive tradition that makes architectural innovation and excellence visible.

The competition offers architects a unique platform. A jury of experts will select the 50 best submissions, which will be presented in a high-quality book. Winning projects will also be honored at the Best of Architecture Summit on October 9, 2025. Participation not only means exclusive visibility in the industry, but also the opportunity to benefit from media coverage and networking – a springboard for any architecture firm.

New builds or conversions of single-family homes completed after January 1, 2022 are eligible to take part. Whether projects made of wood, concrete, brick or energy-efficient solutions: Diversity is welcome. Multi-generation houses or innovative renovations can also be submitted.

Previous winning projects, such as the spectacular Matzwitz House, show how differently and creatively modern single-family home architecture can be interpreted. From rustic elements to innovative materials – the range is impressive. The accompanying yearbook documents this diversity with impressive photos, plans and stories from clients and architects who have realized their visions.

Registration is free of charge, a participation fee is only due upon submission. Projects can be submitted until February 14, 2025. There is also the opportunity to submit innovative products for single-family homes for the “Architects’ Choice 2025” until May 30, 2025.
