“handmade” – excursion tip in August

Vorarlberg is home to a very special exhibition space: located in the village of Bregenzerwald, it resembles a mini national gallery and was designed by Peter Zumthor. The “Werkraum” celebrates nothing less than craftsmanship – with a preference for regional crafts, of course.

Peter Zumthor has also designed the current summer exhibition – in which the work with the hands is presented on video: in 61 short films, each three to seven minutes long. These films are just as aesthetic as the house and the objects on display. They consist of one shot and show unusual, little-noticed actions in a cut sequence – square and in black and white. We see hands labeling, sticking cones, felting surfaces, weeding, shortening lace, boning meat, rigging paper, operating on pines, setting tiles, playing the violin, plastering tines, shaving beards, sawing firewood, laying canal soles, knitting hats, washing hands. The focus is on the skillful hands rather than the product. The film was shot in the Bregenzerwald and in Switzerland, in workshops, on the street, in churches, parlors, stables and gardens.

Incidentally, we also recommend the delicious lunch menu in the Werkraum at a reasonable price.
