High-Altitude Construction at 3,000 Meters: The TITLIS Tower Sets New Standards
High-altitude construction is one of the most challenging disciplines in the construction industry. Extreme weather conditions, logistical challenges, and high technical requirements demand exceptional solutions. The TITLIS Tower in Engelberg is a project currently under construction that exemplifies how existing infrastructure can be transformed into sustainable architecture.
The project is being carried out for TITLIS Bergbahnen, Hotels & Gastronomie and combines telecommunications infrastructure, tourism, and highly complex engineering services in one of Europe’s most exposed locations. Completion is scheduled for 2026.
From Antenna Tower to Alpine Landmark
The structure’s origins date back to the mid-1980s. At that time, the tower was built as part of the telecommunications infrastructure. Even back then, its location at an altitude of over 3,000 meters required an exceptionally robust design: a concrete core anchored deep in the limestone, a massive base, and a precisely engineered steel support structure still form the backbone of the structure today.
After the takeover by TITLIS Bergbahnen, antenna systems that were no longer needed were removed, and the systems that remained necessary were concentrated at the roof level. This created the opportunity to further develop the existing structure architecturally and make it accessible to visitors.
The design concept calls for adding two horizontal structures, four vertical access towers, and a new observation deck to the tower. What was once purely infrastructure is thus transformed into a multifunctional building that combines technology, experience, and a pleasant atmosphere.
Utilizing the Existing Structure as a Design Guiding Principle
From a structural engineering perspective, the project’s particular strength lies in the consistent reuse of the existing steel structure. Instead of a new building, the concept focuses on the transformation of an existing load-bearing structure.
The antenna tower’s delicate steel structure remains a defining element of the architecture. The new components take up this materiality and develop it further using galvanized steel.
