The goal is to preserve the historical substance as much as possible without restricting its current use. This often leads to creative solutions, particularly in interior design. Pipes and cables are discreetly concealed in existing utility shafts, modern technology is integrated into historic spatial structures, and new materials are used in ways that do not detract from the building’s appearance. The Karl & Faber Spring Auction 2025 will feature outstanding works by old masters and 19th century artists. With works by Max Klinger, Franz Horny, Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer and Francisco de Goya, the auction offers a top-class selection for collectors and institutions.

With the Karl & Faber Spring Auction 2025, the Munich auction house is once again putting top-class works from European art history up for auction. The focus of the “Old Masters & 19th Century Art” auction is a group of 30 works by the Leipzig Symbolist Max Klinger. Among them is the painting “Three Women in the Vineyard” from 1912, a work with autobiographical references and stylistic depth. The work was valued at 30,000 to 40,000 euros and is considered a key work within the artist’s oeuvre. It combines autobiographical elements, an intensive exploration of music and the artist’s ambivalent relationship with women. It depicts Elsa Asenijeff, Klinger’s partner and muse, as well as his house in the vineyards of Großjena near Naumburg in the background. The offer is complemented by further paintings, drawings, prints, autographs and sculptures – including the pastel Female Nude on the Seashore from 1916 (estimate: 10,000 euros) and the bronze Cassandra, cast in 1903 (estimate: 6,000 to 8,000 euros). Another object from this collection was recently sold in a private sale to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Like the painting, the drawings and sculptures on offer by Klinger come from a European collection which, according to the auction house, is of “museum format”.

The focus is also on his drawings: Franz Horny’s Chestnut Tree from around 1822, a finely executed nature study in pen and ink, comes from a private collection in southern Germany and is valued at 60,000 to 80,000 euros. The drawing is one of the most impressive works by the “Deutschrömers”, who died young. It is also one of the few surviving works by the artist, who died young and whose precise depictions of nature were already recognized in the 19th century. The fine drawing is part of a collection of 45 lots of high-quality works on paper.
The Karl & Faber Spring Auction 2025 will also feature one of the most extensive print offerings on the European market this year. There will be 87 etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn, including “The Hut and the Haystack” from 1641, with an estimate of 40,000 to 50,000 euros. Albrecht Dürer is represented with 98 lots. Outstanding is the sheet The Coat of Arms with the Skull from 1503 – a depiction that condenses themes such as seduction, transience and moral criticism into a vanitas symbol. The high artistic density and technical brilliance characterize the work as exemplary for Dürer’s middle creative phase, according to the auction house.

Another highlight is Francisco de Goya’s dramatic etching “Another Madness of Him in the Same Square”, part of the “Tauromaquia” series. The sheet, with an estimate of 30,000 to 40,000 euros, documents the creative process of this important series and impresses with its expressive imagery. It is a rare trial proof in which the floor of the arena is only partially finished – a valuable testimony to the graphic creation process.
A rare, complete set of the series Fall of Man and Redemption of the Human Race by Albrecht Altdorfer completes the Old Master segment. The 40 woodcuts, created around 1500 in Regensburg, show an independent view of space and light and are estimated at 12,000 to 15,000 euros.
This selection underlines Karl & Faber’s position as one of Germany’s leading auction houses for works of classical modernism. The Karl & Faber Spring Auction 2025 offers experts, collectors and institutions a high-caliber spectrum of paintings, drawings and prints from the 15th to the early 20th century.
