When moving from a rented apartment to a detached house, a young family also swapped their public transport connection for an electric vehicle. The car is powered by a photovoltaic system on the roof of the house.

House B is located on a former factory site near Stuttgart, which was converted into the “An den Remstal-Quellen” residential area on the basis of a new development plan. The conversion area on the outskirts of Stuttgart offered the young family the opportunity to build their own home.

The design was created by Birk Heilmeyer and Frenzel Architekten and is characterized by two parameters: a budget of 300,000 euros and the requirements of the development plan. The latter stipulate that construction is permitted up to the northern boundary of the property. To the west, an established building line must be included – and the third floor must be set back by three meters.

The result is a volume built consistently according to these specifications with a uniform, dark corrugated sheet metal façade. The industrial material is intended to hint at the location of the former factory site.

Room program

The building is divided into two main zones: the functional zone on the northern boundary of the plot houses the staircase, bathroom, utility room and a storage room. The second zone, the recreation rooms, faces south. The house is accessed via the west and street side – the entrance is visually emphasized by an incision in the cubature.

A two-storey staircase leads directly up from the entrance area. The bathroom, parents’ and children’s rooms are located on the second floor, with living and working areas on the second floor. The architects use the recess on the west side as a terrace – and thus also as an extension of the living area into the outdoor space.
