A Spiegel report warns of a lack of funds for the façade reconstruction, the spokesman for the Humboldt Forum Foundation contradicts this.
The façade reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace is to be financed with private donations. However, the news magazine Spiegel writes that the donations have not been sufficient so far, citing a report by the Federal Ministry of Building to the Bundestag’s budget committee. 43.4 million euros had been received by October 2017, according to the Spiegel article.
Bernhard Wolter, Head of Building Communication at the Humboldt Forum Foundation, does not want to accept this statement: “Firstly, the figures in the reports are often not completely up-to-date due to the necessary coordination in the departments, as in this case: the donation level for the facades is currently around 51 million euros. And secondly, the bet is still on: we have always said that we want to collect the donations by the opening. And we already have more than two-thirds, and that for a building project that is not without controversy.”
In formal terms, there is a gap between the foundation’s cash donations and the current financial requirements, because “of course we have to pay the companies to complete their contracts.” However, this does not result in a money problem, but merely a need for interim financing.
Of the promised 105 million euros, the association has already collected a total of 72.5 million cash donations – which will be used for various areas: 80 of the 105 million euros are planned for the façade reconstruction, the rest for components of the dome and the interior portals.
Larger donations expected towards the end of the construction period
Wolter confirms that the planned risk buffer of 14 million euros has been used up – the report from the Ministry of Construction mentions “considerable disruptions in the execution planning and construction”, which have increased the costs. Wolter says he is happy about the buffer and is not worried about the financing of the construction project. He does not see the planned opening date of the end of 2019 wavering either, although the time buffer has also been used up: “We have agreed binding deadlines with the companies involved, and the castle is finally standing, the second floor is being painted, it’s not as if there is a huge delay.”
If funds are lacking, those responsible can imagine doing without figures or details in the façade decoration for the time being. However, Wolter is very confident that enough donations will be collected. In recent years, the foundation has collected 10 to 15 million euros a year. Wolter believes that the willingness to donate will increase towards the end of the construction period when the public can see the façades without scaffolding – and thus also where the donations are going.
