Innsbruck, Umbrüggler Alm

Because everyone always wants to sit on the bench

New hut hotspot in Tyrol

The Umbrüggler Alm was demolished almost 40 years ago. Now it stands again: in a stylish new look and with a magnificent view. Philipp Lutz and Elmar Ludescher designed the urban hut hotspot above Innsbruck.

Directly from Innsbruck to the Umbrüggler Alm

The Umbrüggler Alm above Innsbruck was already a popular excursion destination at the end of the 19th century. There has been an officially authorized bar here since 1873. The alp owes its name to the farmers from Anbruggen (districts of Mariahilf, St. Nikolaus and Hötting), who owned grazing rights there. Over time, the Tyrolean dialect turned “Anbruggen” into “unbrugg’n” and finally Umbrüggler. With the incorporation of Hoetting in 1938, the alp became the property of the city of Innsbruck, which had the old, dilapidated building demolished in 1979. Several attempts to rebuild the hut failed. The hut has been open again since last winter. Bregenz architects Philipp Lutz and Elmar Ludescher designed the chic hut hotspot with full larch shingling and a narrow, continuous window front on the south side. Inside the organically shaped building, visitors are greeted by a bright and simple living room: The ceiling, walls and floors are clad entirely in silver fir. On the terrace in front – where the bench runs along the building – you can now sit in a sweater in the midday sun and gaze into the distance. The view wanders over Innsbruck, the low mountain range to the south, deep into the Wipp and Stubaital valleys.

The Umbrüggler Alm is easy to reach from the Hungerburg district of Innsbruck thanks to the newly built forest path. It takes about an hour on foot from the Seegrubenbahn valley station, which was once designed by star architect Zaha Hadid. Shortly before the last houses on Gramartstraße, the signposted Umbrüggler Almweg branches off to the north on the right. It leads to a crossroads with a panorama board. You only have to cross the ski slope once. From there, an idyllic forest path leads uphill in several hairpin bends at a pleasant gradient until you reach the wide forest path that takes you directly to the Umbrüggler Alm. Incidentally, the short tour is also suitable for the untrained.
