This year, International Museum Day is taking place under the motto “Museums in the cultural landscape”. This theme is intended to express the fact that museums are not isolated worlds. Rather, they interact with their (cultural) environment through their networking and preserve the culture of many generations. The day of action has been held annually in May since 1978 and offers a varied program. Special guided tours and lectures allow visitors to take a look behind the scenes and gain an impression of how museums work. For restorers in particular, International Museum Day offers an ideal opportunity to learn interesting facts about the various areas of restoration and the processing of materials.
Comment on Museum Day by Prof. Dr. Eckart Köhne, President, Deutscher Museumsbund e.V.:
“On International Museum Day, for the 39th time, museums all over the world are inviting people to get to know their collections, their offerings and their work. In Germany alone, around 1,600 museums are taking part with numerous program items. International Museum Day draws attention to museum work in all its facets. This also includes the areas of conservation and restoration, which are generally not accessible to visitors.
International Museum Day offers the opportunity to draw attention to the work of conservators, which is essential for museums, and to make it accessible to the general public through activities and guided tours. Experience has shown that the fields in which conservators work are of particular interest to the public. It is no coincidence that the “look behind the scenes” is an established and popular event category on International Museum Day. It gives visitors an impression of a highly interesting field of work and the complexity of museum work.”
