Petrology, also known as the study of rocks, is the science of the formation, properties, and uses of rocks. In our online series, we introduce different types of stone and their occurrences: This time, Kinawa Classico.

Kinawa Classico is a migmatite. In addition to migmatites, there are also magmatites. Although they differ in spelling by only one letter, they should not be confused. Magmatites are formed from molten magma. Their formation can occur deep within the Earth (plutonic rocks), as is the case with granites, gabbros, etc., or the magma may have broken through the Earth’s crust (volcanic rocks), as is the case with rhyolites (often colloquially referred to as porphyry) or basalts.
Magmatic rocks belong to the group of igneous rocks. The formation of migmatites involved highly complex geological processes that took place under high pressures and temperatures deep within the Earth. The German term “Mischgneise” (mixed gneiss) most vividly describes such rocks. This term indicates that these rocks consist of different components, namely a paleosome (the older rock component) and the intruded neosome (the newer rock component).
In terms of their technical properties, migmatites and magmatites are very similar. Both possess good to very good technical properties and generally exhibit high resistance to mechanical and chemical attack. What distinguishes migmatites from most magmatites is their visual appearance. Migmatites exhibit very lively patterns with varied textures. When considering migmatites as a whole, it can be said that Kinawa Classico falls within the moderate range in terms of its design prominence and naturally occurring variations.
