The architects use two building materials

The small town of San Feliu de Llobregat is located a few kilometers west of the Catalan capital Barcelona. The architecture firm JAAS designed a multifunctional reception pavilion made of glass and concrete for the soccer stadium there.

The newly built Les Grases pavilion is located on a plot of land on the border between a residential and an industrial area. Among other things, it houses the offices of various sports organizations and a bar. These functions were previously housed in temporary facilities on the site.

The structure of the Les Grases Pavilion builds on the existing conditions of the site and at the same time represents an extension of the neighboring building “Edificio Xepkin”. The new pavilion by JAAS from Barcelona picks up on the dimensions of the neighboring building and extends forward in a straight line, combining the existing traffic routes of the district and creating space for a sports track on its side. In this way, the new pavilion opens up a new passageway. This allows access to the various sports fields on the site.

The building is structurally and functionally divided into two volumes. A large gate serves as a dividing element. At the same time, it regulates the flow of visitors to the soccer pitch on match days. While the bar is located in the first structure, which is centrally positioned and visible from the entire area, the public toilets and offices are housed in the second structure. The heart of the design is an elongated colonnade that defines both the interior and exterior appearance of the building.

Grille panels not only protect against ball impacts

There are barred shutters on the outside of the new pavilion that perform several functions. When they are closed, they protect against the heat of the sun and act as a burglar deterrent at night. They also prevent ball impacts from demolishing the windows during soccer matches. After sunset, the pavilion’s lighting illuminates the access routes to the grounds. A series of skylights emphasize the structure of the building. The building was designed to be versatile and can easily be repurposed in the future.

Another building that invites movement: A soccer club in Bengal had Abin Design Studio build a new clubhouse that doubles as a community center.
