After a two-year break, CULTURA SUISSE opened today in Bern. Until Friday, April 8, everything here revolves around cultural heritage and its preservation. Students from various specializations (Swiss Conservation-Restoration Campus (Swiss CRC)) will be demonstrating live conservation and restoration measures on objects and presenting their work
As a partner school of the Swiss Conservation-Restoration Campus (Swiss CRC), Bern University of the Arts (HKB) is organizing an exhibition stand at CULTURA SUISSE, where students from various specializations will demonstrate live conservation and restoration measures on objects or present works. This event will give visitors a concrete insight into the questions and challenges of the fields of conservation and restoration and their transdisciplinary connections.
On display are, among others, the specialization in graphics, writing and photography, Bern University of the Arts HKB, the specialization in wall painting, stone, stucco and architectural surfaces, Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI) and the specialization in clocks, scientific and technical objects, Haute école Arc Conservation-Restauration (HE-Arc CR).
Melissa Gomez
(specialization in graphic art, documents and photography, Bern University of the Arts HKB): Melissa Gomez works on architectural plans drawn on tracing paper. The main aim of the work is to close tears in the paper, which is normally done with Japanese paper. However, she will try to work on the tears with so-called nano-tissue; the addition of nanocellulose achieves a restoration result with high strength.
Caterina Leandri
Specialization in Wall Painting, Stone, Stucco and Architectural Surfaces, Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI):
Caterina Leandri gives an insight into techniques that can be used to detach a mural painting from its original support and what this process means for the further conservation of the artifact because it takes on completely new characteristics. In particular, she will illustrate the scagliola technique, a special, lesser-known technique in which marble inlays and stonework are imitated using materials that are easier to work with, such as plaster, pigments and animal glue. This fascinating technique is presented on the basis of dated and signed scagliola fragments from an altar front from the canton of Ticino.
Noémie Nydegger
Specialization in clocks, scientific and technical objects, Haute école Arc Conservation-Restauration (HE-Arc CR):
Noémie Nydegger demonstrates the various steps involved in restoring a historical glass: puzzle, first assembly and collage. She will show the interested public samples of all kinds of objects under a microscope.
The Swiss CRC Master Award
On April 7, the Swiss Conservation-Restoration Campus Master Award ceremony will also take place, which each year honors a Master’s thesis by one of the Campus’ students. The four nominees will present their Master’s thesis as part of the exhibition’s supporting program. The award ceremony can be followed live online via Zoom here.
Reading tip: Students of Conservation and Restoration at Bern University of the Arts HKB can expect a lot. The Department of Conservation and Restoration has decades of tradition and experience in the preservation of art and cultural assets, and is innovative and multi-specialized. Dr. Ute Strimmer spoke with Prof. Dr. Andreas Buder, head of the course. “Swiss university education in the field of conservation and restoration is something very special,” explains the conservator with a doctorate. “This is because it has pooled its expertise in a Conservation-Restoration Campus (Swiss CRC). In contrast to the other German-speaking educational institutions, the universities in Switzerland are not competitors, but work in partnership with each other.”
