20 years of Kunsthaus Bregenz have prompted Peter Zumthor to stage a very personal exhibition of his own work. Until January 7, 2018
“Thinking is a line, emotions are space. I love thinking in images.Being able to create spaces that touch, like certain passages in the music of Mahler or Wagner, composed with the means of Schönberg or Webern, with the energy and transparency of Stravinsky – that would be nice. But now a celebration!” Peter Zumthor
Affected or natural? Let the reader decide for themselves from the inviting lines in the exhibition catalog: With the exhibition “Dear to Me”, Peter Zumthor decided on an unusually personal exhibition for the 20th anniversary year of the art museum he built. Music will be performed, books will be read, films will be shown and drinks will be served. The Kunsthaus Bregenz will become a think tank, showcase and listening box for his artistic preferences and inspirations.
The premises of the KUB form a stage for the multitude of concerts, readings and talks. The more than 160 events usually begin on Thursday evenings and end on Sunday mornings, when Peter Zumthor invites a wide variety of guests to talk about the works and creations that inspire him.
On the first floor is the foyer with a stage, bar and four screens for Swiss filmmaker Christoph Schaub’s biographical film collage about Zumthor’s work. The architect also designed the seating in the foyer especially for the exhibition. On the upper floors, the rooms remain almost empty with a photo series by Hélène Binet and a music installation by Olga Neuwirth, as well as the extensive private library of his friend and antiques dealer Walter Lietha and a plant landscape by artists Gerda STEIN and Jörg Lenzlinger.
The idea for the exhibition was born during a visit to his studio in Haldenstein. Zumthor surrounds himself there with architecture and an atmospheric ambience enriched with devotional objects, carpets, pictures and books. The “Dear to Me” exhibition is also a consistent realization of his work with atmosphere – an intellectual and at the same time deeply personal atmospheric space. In contrast to an exhibition of his work, visitors are given the rare opportunity to get to know the inspirational context of his design practice.
