Since January 2013, the Hotel am Steinplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg has been part of the “Autograph Collection”, an association of independent 5-star hotels of the Marriott Group. Built by August Endell in 1906/1907, the hotel – an icon of Art Nouveau – had previously undergone a three-year refurbishment (architect Claudia Dressler/morgen).
The refurbishment measures also included the construction of new elevator shafts. This task was carried out by the Berlin elevator manufacturer Merkur Schoppe, which is part of the Germany-wide Haushahn network. Directly next to the entrance hall, hotel guests can now expect a high-quality elevator group in an open steel frame in an atrium. For this purpose, a glazed steel scaffold was placed on a brick-built shaft in the basement and braced diagonally in the atrium. Integrated strip lighting emphasizes the diagonals and brightens up the space. A gearless drive, which is housed directly in the shaft head, and the suspension belt technology, which is used instead of the usual steel cables, ensure maximum ride comfort.
The elevator manufacturer and interior designer worked hand in hand on the cabin design. The design concept by interior designer Tassilo Bost from Berlin continues seamlessly into the elevator cabins. The stainless steel cabins with LED light ceiling are fitted with a mirror wall and a wooden handrail at the rear. As is now standard in hotels, the stainless steel panel is coupled with a card reader that can be used to activate access authorization to the floors via a room card. Integrated screens above the panel provide passengers with hotel information.
