Every two years, the European Copper in Architecture Award honors outstanding and pioneering architectural projects. This year, the jury was spoiled for choice among 35 submissions from all over Europe. The winner was the Maersk Tower in Copenhagen, which impresses with a network of copper slats that envelops the entire building. The audience award went to the Hydropolis water sculpture pavilion in Wroclaw, Poland.
The 18th edition of this biennial award once again recognizes the growing influence of copper materials on modern design. In 2017, the jury consisted of four architects who have all previously received the Copper in Architecture Award: Ebbe Waehrens (BBP ARKITEKTER, Copenhagen), Maxime Enrico (LAN, Paris), Ville Hara (Avanto Architects, Helsinki) and Craig Casci (GRID Architects, London).
The Maersk Tower by Møller Architects is an important landmark on the Copenhagen skyline. The conceptual development of the building offers a fresh, interactive typology of the research building. Its response to the urban context is impressive, with a gently curved design that makes it slender and elegant – right down to the unusual details and the innovative use of gently animated copper façades that characterize the building. Architect Mands Mandrup from Müller Architekten explains the architectural and urban design concept of Maersk Tower in this video.
Commendations and public vote
Two infrastructure projects received commendations this year: the Lahti Travel Center in Finland, designed by JKMM Architects, and an entrance portal for the Bosruck Tunnel in Austria, designed by Riepl Riepl Architekten. Both projects are characterized by an innovative and dynamic use of copper materials that perfectly emphasize the use of the objects.
The winner of the public vote at www.copperconcept.org impresses with its sculptural use of copper: the Hydropolis in Wroclaw, the only knowledge center on water in Poland, welcomes visitors with an entrance pavilion made of copper with an innovative water printer sculpture.
