On the 1st European Restoration Day on October 14, workshops and studios in universities, museums, monument offices and palace administrations will be open to the public. RESTAURO presents the program for Munich

On October 14, restorers throughout Germany and Europe will provide insights into their work: On the 1st European Restoration Day, they will open their workshops and studios to the public in universities, museums, monument offices and palace administrations. Nine 30-minute themed tours will also take place at the Pinakothek museums in Munich on this day. Restorers from the Doerner Institut will explain their work on the Bavarian State Painting Collections to visitors.JanSchmidt goes into Stephan Lochner’s Wings of the Age of Judgment. He tells their eventful history and reports on the recent restoration of the wings (Alte Pinakothek: 11 am and 12 noon). Elisabeth Bushart devotes her talk to Cy Twombly’s large-format paintings and makes material-related comments on the work process of the Lepanto paintings (Museum Brandhorst: 2 and 3 pm). Melanie Bauernfeind reveals hidden details of works in the Alte Pinakothek and explains what preventive conservation looks like in the museum (Alte Pinakothek: 12 and 1 p.m.). Florian Schwemer answers the question of why light needs to be restored by looking at Dan Flavin’s work (Pinakothek der Moderne: 10 and 11 a.m.). Maike Grün sheds light on the conservation of Olaf Metzel’s “Journey to Jerusalem” and discusses its production, material and reinstallation (Pinakothek der Moderne: 4 and 5 pm). Eva Schneider explains how to become a conservator and which paths lead to the profession (Neue Pinakothek: 12 and 1 p.m.). Renate Poggendorf reports on the ageing of paintings and the restoration of a historical collection (Neue Pinakothek: 1 and 2 pm). And Ulrike Fischer will talk about the work of conservators during the preparation of an exhibition project (Alte Pinakothek: 2 and 3 p.m.). Johannes Engelhardt (Alte Pinakothek: 4 and 5 p.m.) shows painting frames in the field of tension between conservation requirements and museum presentation.

Those interested can register half an hour before the start of each guided tour. Participation is free, the entrance fee is 1 euro (Sunday admission).
