The architects from Atelier Hart Bertelootbegin the description of their detached house in Lambersart in northern France with a quote from the Architectural Review from 1953. There, Alison and Peter Smithson describe one of their buildings in London’s Soho district, which is very similar in design to the French architects’ project. The architects from Hart Berteloot also leave the structure of the new detached house in Lambersart visible wherever possible. What appears simple and unpretentious is based on a high quality of workmanship. The seemingly simple house lives from this.

If you walk along the road to the detached house in Lambersart, a small community in the north of France, you follow an old brick wall. But only this wall radiates continuity. Otherwise, the new building by Atelier Hart Berteloot stands out clearly from its surroundings, from the gabled roofs of the neighboring houses and their mineral-plastered facades. Instead, the first floor opens up with large windows, while the upper floor is clad in clinker brick. This makes it clear from afar that the first floor is the place for communal family life. A large room spans the entire area and is a living room, dining room and kitchen all in one. Its generous glazing opens up the room to the adjoining garden. The room layout on the upper floor is just as simple as on the first floor. Three bedrooms of roughly the same size are arranged side by side. They are complemented by two bathrooms at the front of the building.

There are echoes of Brutalism on both the first floor and the upper floor of the detached house. The ceilings of the living rooms are made of compressed screed and look like open concrete. In contrast, the walls are made of simple, open-pored concrete blocks. Concrete is also visible in the staircase in the living room: while the entire floor on the first floor is covered with gray tiles, the risers remain uncovered.

Wood and textiles

In contrast to the gray tones of the ceiling, walls and floors, the window frames are made of wood. Just like the built-in furniture in the kitchen, the wood radiates brightness and warmth. The windows often consist of more than just glass and frames. In various places, the reveals resemble pieces of furniture and are used as such. The ventilation sashes on the sides of the fixed glazed window elements also have a furniture-like quality. The simplicity of the design language runs through all areas, be it in the form of the square tiles and the simple washbasin in the bathroom or the curtains made of simple white linen.
