In the competition for the new library in Wuhan, the design by MVRDV emerged as the winner. For their design, the team borrowed typical features from the Wuhan landscape to create not only a center for culture, but also a landmark for the city.
The design by MVRDV emerged as the winner of the competition for the new library in Wuhan. Together with their Chinese colleagues from the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Zhejiang University (UAD), the team designed the 140,000 square meter Wuhan Library. This will make the library one of the largest in the country. For their design, the team borrowed typical features from the Wuhan landscape to create not only a center for culture, but also a landmark for the city.
The office took an unconventional approach to the construction of the Tianjin Binhai Library back in 2017. With its spherical auditorium and cascading bookshelves, MVRDV ‘s library stands out from the cityscape. The planners chose a similar approach for their new project: buildings such as the Wuhan Library or Tianjin Binhai Library should not only be a collection of lending books, but also a center for education.
The Wuhan Library is located in the city’s business district. Nevertheless, the library has its own park, which surrounds the building in small islands. In addition, a large green area adjoining an urban residential district invites visitors to linger. In the center of this artificially created nature, the hexagonal building rises up in its striking shape: the glass sides form semi-circular surfaces, which give the building an asymmetrical shape through circular arches with varying degrees of concavity.
In general, the concept of the building is strongly oriented towards the local topography: the upward curved roof represents a flowing movement and is an allusion to the water landscape of Wuhan, which is also known as the “city of 1,000 lakes”. This roof surface is made up of different parts: Wave-shaped slats shade the interior, with circular solar modules arranged between them to provide energy in a sustainable way.
The façade, on the other hand, is clad with vertically mounted slats. Arranged irregularly, they provide shade in the interior – thereby reducing energy consumption for air conditioning – and also serve as stylized book spines to indicate the function of the building.
The library is located right on the border between the large urban park and the housing estates. This position makes the Wuhan Library a hub that emphasizes its importance to the population. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city from three different angles through large windows on three sides of the building.
The formats of the windows are also well thought out: the two horizontal window formats face the park, while curved vertical openings offer a view of the high-rise buildings in the city center. This means that you not only have an impressive view from the inside, but can also look into the library from the outside.
Inside, towering terraces refer to the urban landscape, while a deep “gorge” stands for the confluence of the waters in Wuhan. This makes it the main meeting point for visitors, where all knowledge can symbolically flow together.
Jacob van Rijs from MVRDV describes the idea behind the design of the interior of the Wuhan Library as a “nature versus the city” concept. While a large public space extends on the first floor, from the floor above, various areas are layered around it in a seemingly loose manner. The terraces, which become smaller towards the top, create opportunities for visitors to retreat.
