Natural stone in outdoor areas – preserving value and making maintenance easier

Gardens and terraces are increasingly being designed with the most exclusive materials. How the investment in the outdoor area is maintained in the long term can be influenced even before it is laid.

High-quality and exclusive materials are increasingly being used in gardens and patios to create an individual atmosphere. Natural stone is often the material of choice for façades, terraces and steps.

If you want to enjoy the material for a long time, you should find out about cleaning options and protective treatments when selecting the material. Natural stone is permeated by capillaries and pores. This system of cavities transports foreign substances from the substrate, the surface or substances dissolved in the stone. This also applies to granite or gneiss, which give a robust impression. The diversity of natural stone is reflected not only in its appearance and texture, but also in its strongly varying capillary absorbency, which determines its sensitivity to stains.

In conjunction with an intensively used terrace as an extended living space, the requirements for cleanability increase. If you want to preserve the value of natural stone in the long term, treat the outdoor surfaces with an impregnation. This counteracts the formation of stains by reducing the deep penetration of dirt. Soiling is retained on the surface, where it is easier to remove.

Lithofin Fleckstop W has an oil and water repellent effect and is suitable for intensively used outdoor surfaces. Lithofin Basic Protection W, a purely water-repellent special impregnation, tends to be chosen when the surfaces are exposed to light soiling or only moisture. These are in particular paths, walls, cover plates etc. Photo: Lithofin
A side effect of Lithofin Fleckstop W, as a pre-impregnation, is the easier application or washing off of jointing compounds, as their adhesion to the surface is greatly reduced. Paving joint mortar in particular is easier to apply and thicker binder films or uneven darkening are prevented. The aspect of flank adhesion was therefore examined in more detail. The corresponding measurements confirmed that the adhesion of the paving joint mortar meets the necessary requirements despite Lithofin Fleckstop W. Photo: Lithofin

Due to the low weather constancy in the summer months, we recommend water-soluble impregnations such as Lithofin FLECKSTOP >W< and Lithofin Grundschutz >W<. This product group reacts less sensitively to residual moisture than products containing solvents, for example.

When laid unbound in grit, sand or gravel, water usually gets under the covering via open or permeable joints. Inadequate drainage capacity of the substrate or insufficient slope leads to moisture remaining under the tiles.

The capillary absorbency transports moisture to the surface, where it appears as dark spots. To prevent moisture problems with unbound installation, it has proven to be a good idea to treat the slabs all around with the intended impregnation such as Lithofin FLECKSTOP >W< or Lithofin Grundschutz >W<. This measure reduces capillary absorbency and the risk of stains caused by rising damp.
