After a good 50 years, it was time for a complete refurbishment of the DIN buildings in Berlin. As the general contractor, the Lindner Group was primarily responsible for the new interior fit-out and building technology.
More than 100 years of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), including around 50 years of its headquarters on Burggrafenstraße in Berlin – reasons enough to tackle both a complete (energy-related) refurbishment of the ensemble (with building sections from the 1960s – 1990s) and to design a completely new working environment for the approximately 700 employees. The aim was to support the transformation of DIN’s internal organization for the 21st century with the right structural framework. To this end, the small-scale floor plan was removed and the building was stripped back to its basic static structure. The external façade was also “clad” in a new look and extended with a risalit over 10 storeys. The new DIN building, designed by klm-Architekten Berlin (structural engineering including interior design) & Kim Nalleweg Architekten (façade), now appears as a calm, monolithic block with a prominent main entrance with an open foyer, staff restaurant and roof terrace.

In 2019, the Lindner Group was awarded the contract for the expansion of the office worlds, including completely new technical building systems, electrical trades and building automation. In just 19 months, around 20,000 m² of modern, color-coordinated working environments with various workplace situations were created. In addition to high design standards, the focus was on a high level of room comfort and efficient functionality. Lindner was not only responsible for the fit-out, but also supplied the majority of the installed systems: for example, metal ceilings – partly installed as heating/cooling elements – or acoustically optimized wall panels. The work and meeting areas were separated using GK partitions, supplemented by Lindner glass partitions and wall elements with wooden surfaces. The wooden doors and door elements in “smoked oak” were also supplied by Lindner. The project was completed smoothly and on schedule using lean construction methods. Thanks to the collaborative and transparent planning and management, the project was successfully completed together despite all the challenges that a renovation entails.
