“Portes Bonheur – le Chemin des Carrières” is the title of the hiking trail completed last year by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter and translates as “Gates to Happiness”. In 2016, the Norwegian studio based in Oslo and Aarhus won the competition organized by the municipality of Rosheim in Alsace to revitalize the old Rosheim – Saint-Nabor railroad line and the disused quarries in the region.
The journey of discovery, which has been created along the original railroad line, stretches over eleven kilometers and consists of several sequences along the route: the starting point is a labyrinth-like pavilion made of concave and convex Corten steel elements in Rosheim, where the hiking and cycling trail begins. The tracks are preserved and bring locals and tourists closer to the history, while benches and shelters invite you to linger and offer protection.
Behind a forest path in Leonardsau, two towering Corten steel sheets form a portal to mark the end of the forest and the beginning of open terrain. The tapered pillars frame the Mont Sainte-Odile behind them. Finally, the path ends in a quarry in Saint-Nabor, which nature is slowly reclaiming. The high point and end point of the trail is a viewing platform on a hill, from which a wide view opens up over the Rosheim valley and the Alsatian plain. As the title suggests, a shamrock served as the source of inspiration for the platform.
