Two letters from Pliny the Younger to the historian Tacitus provide us with a precise description of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The cities on Vesuvius were completely destroyed and buried, perfectly preserved under the volcanic ash layers until their rediscovery in the 18th century. Since then, excavations have continued to provide new insights into the reconstruction of the tragic catastrophe.
The preservation of such a unique ‘open-air museum’ as Pompeii – today one of the world’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites – is today more than ever an enormous challenge, both in terms of conservation and the development of the archaeological cultural heritage. The complex issues involved require a highly innovative approach and the most comprehensive and multidisciplinary view of the project.
On October 9, the General Director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, Prof. Dr. Massimo Osanna, will present the large-scale Pompei project. The open-air museum is intended to give the city on Mount Vesuvius a new image. Work on the project has been underway since 2012 with funding from the European Union and the Italian state and is expected to continue until 2020. In 2017 alone, around 3.5 million visitors visited the archaeological park, which is certainly also due to the results achieved so far (the reopening of 37 domus that had been inaccessible for a long time, the significant expansion of the city’s road network to make a large part of the site accessible and numerous spectacular finds during archaeological excavations).
