MVRDV’s Portlantis visitor and exhibition center was opened in Rotterdam on 19 March 2025. The building is located at the westernmost tip of the port on the artificial land extension Maasvlakte 2 and serves as a point of contact for visitors who want to find out more about the development of the port and its future changes.

The building consists of five exhibition levels twisted against each other with panoramic windows that offer different perspectives of the harbor, the sea and the coast. A red staircase structure leads from the dunes to the publicly accessible roof, which serves as a vantage point. The design follows a functional concept that is tailored to the use of the rooms and the lines of sight.

Inside, there is a 22-meter-high atrium that serves as a central space. A kinetic sculpture is placed in the middle, while a model of the harbor welcomes visitors on the lower level.

The exhibition, curated by Kossmanndejong, extends over three levels and covers various aspects of the port. The topics range from its historical development to current logistical processes and the planned sustainability measures. The panoramic windows are specifically aligned with relevant areas of the port to create a direct link between the exhibition and reality.

The first floor houses a café with a view of the dunes. On the fourth floor there is a restaurant with a view of both the North Sea and the skyline of the port, which is illuminated at night.

Sustainability aspects were taken into account in the design. The building follows the principles of the circular economy and can be dismantled into its individual parts. The façade panels are part of a return and reuse program. The foundation was built without concrete piles so as not to leave any traces after possible dismantling.

The building produces more energy than it consumes. Effective thermal insulation and a heat pump reduce energy requirements, while an on-site wind turbine generates electricity. Overall, 30 percent more energy is produced than is needed to operate the building.

Portlantis serves as an interface between the city and the port. Many Rotterdam residents perceive the port as distant, even though it plays a central role for the city. The center enables visitors to understand the economic, environmental and social importance of the port.

In addition, Portlantis offers an overview of the transformation of the port infrastructure. The port of Rotterdam is increasingly focusing on sustainable technologies, alternative drives and climate-friendly logistics processes. The visitor center gives interested parties an insight into these developments.

After the official opening on March 19, 2025, Portlantis will be open to the public from March 22, 2025. Visitors will then have the opportunity to explore the exhibition and use the viewing platform.

The opening of the center will create a new focal point for education and information, making the transformation of the port of Rotterdam visible.
