Brussels’ Molenbeek West Station is being upgraded in terms of function and infrastructure. The Belgian infrastructure company Infrabel has built the headquarters of its own training academy there, including open space. It is part of a large-scale district development in Brussels along the inner-city railroad lines. A major advantage of the location, in addition to the existing infrastructure and the direct proximity of the training center to the practice, is of course that trainees and employees can travel there by train. Parking spaces for cars are not required. The architects from Atelier Kempe Thill, based in Rotterdam, are responsible for the Infrabel Academy. They won the 2016 competition in a collaboration with Canevas architectes et ingénieurs.
Academy for rail network operator Infrabel
The horizontally aligned building is neatly inserted between elongated warehouses and the railroad line. The previously unused open space is now home to Infrabel’s theoretical and practical training center. This is where staff are trained to keep tracks, signaling systems and overhead lines in good condition throughout the country. With the new training center, however, Infrabel also wants to become more attractive as a trainer overall; after all, the next generation should play a key role in the maintenance and further development of sustainable mobility. There are also plans for a public park with high-quality recreational areas, which will be connected to the new building by means of a pedestrian bridge over the tracks.
In the new main building of the almost 8,500 square meter project, the functional demands of the architecture meet the technical demands of the infrastructure. Theheight developmentof the Infrabel Academy largely corresponds to the immediate surroundings. Due to structural considerations, a tall, point-shaped building was avoided, which would not have looked good on the site. Instead, Atelier Kempe Thill designed a restrained, horizontal cuboid with a green fifth façade. The building is crowned in the middle by the building technology on top, which is partly presented between shed roof shapes that borrow from the industrial character of the surroundings.
Classic modernism
Nevertheless, the finished building lags behind the original rendering in terms of plasticity. The drama of the strongly three-dimensional façade was not fully carried over into reality. In contrast, the disciplined and orderly expression of the building and its exterior space is very successful. To achieve this, Kempe Thill integrated necessary facilities such as a bicycle parking facility into the cubature of the building. This minimalism quickly belies the planning challenges involved in designing the building. For example, the underground level of the building, where the train tracks are located, is invisible from the outside. In addition, the building, including the track level, also rests on the tunnel of the metro, which runs even deeper. The new Infrabel Academy building therefore not only required sophisticated statics, but also had to be light. The architects also had to take into account the vibrations and noise generated by the tracks.
Three naves and two wings
The floor plans of the Infrabel Academy show a kind of “three-aisled” room structure. The meeting zones are located in the “central nave”, from which the classrooms lead off to the left and right. In addition to in-house training, Infrabel also uses the Academy for congresses and other events. Kempe Thill designed the room structures flexibly for this purpose. Inside the academy, the color white and exposed concrete continue the image of rational technology. Colored elements are only present in the form of furniture. In the large, uncluttered atriums, the shed roof can be experienced as a skylight. Daylight reaches the first floor, creating a connection to the outside even in the spacious circulation core.
Functionally, the Infrabel Academy is divided into two main areas. Theory is taught in one and practice in the other. Due to this desired spatial separation, Kempe Thill designed an open entrance situation. This allows visitors to cross the building completely without entering the teaching ponds. Visitors can reach both parts of the academy from this passageway. Inside, there are a total of three atriums around which the architects have grouped the theoretical classrooms on the upper floor. The first floor mainly houses practical classrooms. These benefit from the proximity to the railway tracks and the practice hall, just as the Infrabel Academy as a whole benefits from its immediate surroundings – and vice versa.
